Thailand considers humanitarian centre for Myanmar refugees

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is considering the establishment of a humanitarian assistance centre along the Thai-Myanmar border. The proposed centre aims to aid Myanmar refugees fleeing the internal conflict between junta forces and rebel minority groups.

Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara confirmed ongoing discussions with Myanmar officials yesterday about this initiative, prompted by the dire circumstances within Myanmar and stated that…

“Thailand shares approximately 2,400 kilometres of border with Myanmar. [That’s why] Thailand can’t stay still and has to provide [humanitarian] assistance to Myanmar refugees,”

The proposed centre, once established, will serve as a vital conduit for the transportation, provision of medical services, and food for those affected by Myanmar’s internal conflicts.

After almost two years of 'fighting', the Thai government is 'considering' helping Burmese refugees.

A very sad, slow response Thailand.

And the UN and the rest of the world says "       ".

Still it is better than what Prayut did to them - sent them back.

That's a commendable hope but as Americans say, "Where's the beef?"

Thailand must ratify the 1951 Refugee Convention and resurrect its Human Rights Commission sufficiently that it can once again be accredited by the UN Human Rights Council that it lost after Gen. Prayut made himself PM in 2014.

Thailand's HRC went from bad to worse as a result of the 2017 NHRCT Act, which further stripped away the agency’s independence and transformed it into a de facto government mouthpiece, contrary to the United Nations Principles relating to the Status of National Institutions (the Paris Principles).

Since when has Thailand been concerned about humanitarian questions?

I don't want to be vulgar, but it's BS.

We know a Burmese couple pretty well, and after living here for many years they speak Thai and all their paperwork in order as both have jobs, but they live in fear of what could happen they obviously know more than we do within the Burmese communities, why should that be? as far as I know they pay tax and SS

Why? So they can wash themselves down the gutter like the Western nations have done?  Virtue signaling at the expense of their own populace.

The biggest mistake any country can make is to open their borders to a single refugee, even one.  Build a camp on the other side of their border and send in supplies when needed.   The reason Thailand remains a high trust nation is because of the homogeneous population.  Look at the West now, protests by foreigners over wars being fought on the other side of the world.  Who needs that crap?  Put them in containers and send them back via the Red Sea.  The Houthis will be the trial by ordeal.

I applaud Thailand's tough stance on immigration and citizenship.
