I have my appointment to convert my foreign car/moto license to Thai soon in Bangkok, and am reading mixed reports about what the actual appointment entails.

I've got all my docs in order, including the online DLT video training thing, but am wondering whether during the appointment to convert them, I'll have to do any written test, or if it's just watching more videos (or neither)? If it is a written test, is there any recommended study guide?

No driving or theory tests are required and the e-learning should avoid the need for more video watching. Make sure your license is not expired and in English or provide a certified English or Thai translation. The only tests are physical eyesight/reaction related tests.

There should not be any more written test or videos but they will test eyesight and reaction times

which should be no problems but take not how many fail ..its quite alarming..then note how many are eventually given license which is even more alarming 😱

also I would take some cash money as they may not except anything else !

In Pattaya the tests are garbage they don't explain well enough, no wonder people fail

they explain quite well press the accelerator pedal (left side) watch the LED lights escalate from green to red as soon as red is seen then stamp on the brake pedal (right side) amazing how many fail this test..

i think it's faulty, firstly why green to red, green amber red would make more sense

I can understand a bit if the candidates have only ever driven a manual gear clutch based vehicle

then this test would be a bit challenging..myself driving a 'Auto' for the the first time had similar issues

I kept trying to use use 2 feet when the auto tester commands just one, ultimate lazy..

"en <deleted> if ai cation" please resit this at all cost.

A large chunk won't have driven a car, if they said just use one foot probably more would pass. I've been 3 or 4 times and they never really explain properly, maybe better now the old lady has gone in Pattaya, probably stressed out

Amber only makes sense when it is flashing ...meaning proceed with ultimate caution.

they don't use the UK green amber red system at normal traffic lights.they do have a countdown system at many junctions which I like, and the turn left if safe to do so at traffic lights is great too

nearly as good as roundabouts 😋

Not sure where you live but traffic lights in Pattaya mostly go green amber red

Sometimes green flashes shortly before changing to amber, then red. I guess flashing green is a warning to put your foot down!

Taking some cash is a good point; had to renew my 5-year license in Bangkok recently (at the DLT location in Bang Chak) and they only took cash because the E-pay system was u/s.

In addition to the reaction test (mostly to check you are awake, I feel), don't you also have to do the depth perception test lining up the little sticks?

I did my license conversion a few months ago. I've read that the law has changed and a theory test would now be required. I was nervous that I'd fail the theory test as I've done several online and they were much harder than I realized. But, luckily, there were no theory test. The physical tests were easy.

I didn't use an agent. I was clueless on how the process went at the DLT but it was easy and only took 55 minutes from the time the office opened at 7:30 to when I received my driver licenses. I think I paid 310 THB in cash.

DLT Bang Chak requires an appointment via their app or online. No walk-ins allowed. I saw several foreigners got refused service because they didn't have one. Available appointments are months out. I heard agents can help you with this. But I had time and patience and got my docs in order before my appointment.

It's not a test to see how you respond in the real world. It's meant to test your reaction time. So green to red makes sense.

Hey watch it! I'll be renewing my licence next January and I'll be 81 years! It will good to know that my reactions are still sharp enough.

Except in practice here amber means to accelerate even more.

Tuesday it was explained and demonstrated very thoroughly. You would need to have been very out of it to have not understood.......

what about the 50 multiple choice questions were one needs to get 45 correct ? has that been done away with now ? or is that done at home now, online ?

No it still exists and it's done at the DLT. But it does not apply for conversion of a foreign license nor renewal of a Thai license.

be careful if you see a pastel yellow bar appear at the bottom of the page, it means the session is corrupt and it won't let you pass the threshold questions to save the progress of the module and you need to hard refresh your browser (and possibly log out) or try a different browser.

Last time I was there everyone had to pay cash.

In Chiangmai they also give you an Ishihara Test.
