snoop1130
(NNT) – The government is focusing on the tourism sector to generate 3.5 trillion baht this year, promoting Thailand as a year-round destination. In 2023, the country welcomed over 27 million tourists, led by visitors from Malaysia and China. From January to December, tourist numbers reached 27.25 million, in line with government targets. Malaysia, China, South Korea, India, and Russia were the top contributors to these figures. The government aims to increase tourism revenue by spotlighting both popular and lesser-known locations. The revenue goal is divided between domestic (1 trillion baht) and international (2.5 trillion baht) tourism. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Thai Chamber of Commerce are actively promoting provinces like Phrae, Lampang, and Nakhon Sawan for their untapped tourism potential. They aimed for 10 million in 2022 and they exceeded that with 11 million arrivals, in 2023 they had a range of 25-30 million and 28 million arrived, just above the middle of their expectations. 3
SHA 2 BKK
I see they have announced a large drop in the imported wines excise - currently 50-60%. Maybe will get access to some decent priced plonk. This is aimed apparently at boosting tourism - but it shall also boost my wine cabinet. Drop to take place for one year as soon as its Gazetted. 1 1

You have to be careful when they say arrivals... those are not all tourists. A fair percentage are returning Thais, foreign business owners and others making connecting flights. They count every man and his dog to bolster the so-called tourist numbers. 1 1

Thais, returning or otherwise will be on Thai passports and won't be on tourist visas therefore not included in FOREIGN tourist arrivals which is what the figures represent, likewise I very much doubt a significant number of foreign business owners if resident will be on tourist visas . If you're in transit and don't go through immigration you are not counted. It's a sure fire and positive sign tourism is recovering when people resort to claiming the numbers are significantly increased - " by a fair percentage " by those not on tourist visas without any proof that is actually the case in practice. 1 2 1 1

I still find it very strange that a large number of the expats living here are constantly critical of Thailand but still continue to live here. I’m expecting the usual response of we’re married etc etc. Even so, that does not prevent them from returning to their home country with their spouse. It could be like you said in another post, they are like desperate refugees, rejected by their own societies. Or they are just grumpy old men with nothing better to do.

As has been stated many times, the counting system has not changed. So, it is valid to compare 2023 numbers with those of 2019, and earlier, since the counting system has been the same. If they were counting 'every man and his dog' in 2021 to bolster the numbers, they were also counting 'every man and his dog' in earlier years. If they had wanted to 'bolster' the numbers to make themselves look good, they surely would have done it in 2021, when just 427,869 arrived, dogs not included. 3

How they came up with these numbers, did they include people transiting through Thailand, foreign workers, temporary workers, weekend cross border Malays Edited January 3 by Mavideol
