YAH BAH-CRAVING BANDIT RIPS OFF PATTAYA KATUEY’s GOLD NECKLACE

In yet another case of a crime induced by Yah Bah (speed) craving, a gold necklace was snatched from an old katuey (lady of the second dimension) to get money to buy drugs and to use for lawyer’s fees in the thief’s previous criminal case. The robber sped off on his motorbike, trying to escape pursuing police, but fell off his bike and was arrested.

On 19 July, at 6.30 p.m. a police patrol led by Pol.Capt. Prasert Cherdchu, of Pattaya Police, being notified of a robbery at Dolphin Roundabout, Pattaya 2nd Road, arrived at the scene to find a distressed Mr. Somphong Chaijaruen, a 58 year-old Katuey from Naklua, who works as a cook at Town in Town Hotel.

He informed the police that he had been on his friend’s motorbike on the way to work after watching a football match at Phothi-Samphan School. Suddenly, a guy on a black Honda Wave S 125, with no license plate, zoomed up to him and snatched his 75 gram gold necklace that he uses to hang his three Buddha images in a gold frame. The robber sped off along Pattaya 2nd Road.

In his haste to escape, the robber aroused the suspicions of passers by, one of whom notified the police who pursued him down Pattaya 2nd Road. Seeing the pursuing police, the robber, later identified as Wichian Wongprasert (24) from Nongprue, put on a spurt of speed, but fell off his bike in the process. The police caught him and finding the incriminating evidence of the gold necklace with three Buddha images attached, arrested him.

He later confessed that his motivations for the crime were to obtain funds to pay a lawyer for a previous case still in the courts and to satisfy his drug cravings. He thought robbery would be a suitable means of raising the necessary cash.
