Protesters intensify demonstrations over Thaksin Shinawatra’s preferential treatment

The Students and People’s Network for Thailand Reform (STR) are intensifying their demonstrations over the alleged preferential treatment of Thaksin Shinawatra, the convicted former prime minister. The protesters are set to stage a sit-in outside the Government House starting February 2.

 

According to Pichit Chaimongkol, the STR leader, there are plans to protest indefinitely alongside other groups that are targeting agencies where the STR had previously submitted petitions concerning the issue. Earlier, between January 12 and 14, the STR had organised demonstrations at the Government House. They demanded the government uphold judicial standards about Thaksin, who has overstayed his 120-day limit for inpatient treatment at the Police General Hospital without being imprisoned. His inpatient care was scheduled to end on December 22.

 

Pichit disclosed that the demonstrators will send a petition to the president of the Supreme Court. The petition requests the court to establish a panel to scrutinize the National Anti-Corruption Commission’s handling of the case. The petition, which requires 20,000 signatures, reportedly enjoys widespread support across the country. Pichit is confident they will gather the necessary signatures before Thaksin qualifies for parole on February 22.

 

Pichit also raised doubts about Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai’s assertion that Thaksin’s treatment outside of prison is lawful. He noted that no other prisoner had been given the same treatment as Thaksin. 74 year old Thaksin was admitted to the Police General Hospital soon after his return to Thailand on August 22.

How many other prisoners get the same treatment?

How many other prisoners ever had a similar treatment? 

I only remember one mafia boss in Chonburi who got special treatment when he was very sick.

According to the 'head of prisons' in a report on AN a while back, thousands of prisoners over 70 years old serve their sentence at home or in hospital.

meh, get a journalist, visit a prison, get a list of the 20 oldest inmates, preferably his age or close, and write a comparison exposé.

Hey, don´t jump to conclusions unsupported by real facts. No one have seen him, or been able to visit him. As for all we know, he can be handcuffed to a medieval stretching bench. Maybe they are just showing old smiling photos over and over again for the followers not to worry.

And when will they start protesting about the generals walking free after the greatest crime of all "the theft of a country at the end of a gun" because there is no greater crime.

They will sit there until his pardon is granted then what?

The only thing worse than the theft of a country at the end of a gun, is a theft of a country without having to use a single gun. Perhaps just the threat of 20 to 50 years in prison was enough. 

 

One only has to look as far as Russia to be able to draw a similar comparison.

The whole thing was well planned out before he ever said foot in Thailand, the night before he was partying with his friend, some dictator, type guy in Cambodia, and when he came back within a few hours he was in a suite in the hospital just as always planned, it’s been over 120 days Before you know it so I have a full pardon and you’ll be seeing him in public smiling and shaking hands as if everything was good same same he stole billions of dollars but with that much money he can spread it around a little bit so he has the influence sooner or later his sister will follow the same pattern and be back  Corruption from the very top TIT

If they are not at Uni studying they should get a part time job and try to reduce the Student Loan debt and not waste time protesting.  It was reported yesterday:   The Student Loan Fund (SLF) has bad debts that have reached 100 billion baht,

Just a question as I was not in the Kingdom of Thailand in 2006 … were there protests opposing the Coup d’etat overthrowing the elected government at that time?

the helicopter ride out of the prison was probably to his penthouse, and nobody can go visit him, because he ain't there...
