Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has outlined plans to transform Thailand into an Asian aviation hub. The announcement was made during his keynote speech at the Thailand 2024 The Great Challenges event. He highlighted the government’s focus on tourism and the introduction of several measures to boost the industry, including reciprocal visa exemption programmes.

 

A reciprocal visa exemption deal will be signed with China this week, according to the premier. Additionally, talks are planned with the European Union to discuss a similar agreement with Schengen countries.

 

PM Srettha detailed the government’s ambitious aim to upgrade the nation’s aviation sector, which would necessitate streamlined immigration procedures, flight overhauls, and the construction of airports in secondary cities. He underscored the significance of extending economic opportunities to Thai citizens through major projects, referring to the Thaksin Shinawatra government’s decision to construct the Suvarnabhumi airport as a past example, reported Bangkok Post.

 

He stated, “Over the past two decades, we had governments that saw opportunities and seized them.”

Come to think of it, I don't recall a " hub" announcement for a couple of weeks!

By now Thailand must be the hub for almost anything.

Does anybody have a list of all the Thailand hub promises from the last decades and what actually happened?

Is Thailand the hub for anything?

Of course there is the nightlife, but I don't remember if that was ever promoted.

Really? Please do enlighten us and give us a few examples.

About the only opportunity they've grabbed in recent years that the neighbours haven't also adopted is deregulating cannabis, and the government currently seems intent on reversing that move.

If they've seized so many opportunities then why has the war-torn Vietnamese economy been growing around twice as fast over the past two decades? Even the humble, backwards Philippines has outperformed mighty Thailand.

In fairness, hasn't Thailand become a medical hub? The success is reflected in the way prices have gone up in the last 10 years or so.

The aviation hub objective has been declared by successive Thai governments for over 50 years. Never quite seems to happen...

First renew the very old Thai immigration law before making a Asian Aviation Hub, begin from the beginning will be more appropriate.

Effing groundhog day.

How about staffing immigration of existing airports first before adding more hubs...flew out yesterday morning and only about 25% of passport counters staffed, resulting in very long queues.
