UN agency halting food deliveries to northern Gaza, citing increasing chaos

In a distressing development exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) announced on Tuesday a halt in food deliveries to the northern region of the territory. The decision, made in light of escalating chaos and security concerns, threatens to worsen the already dire situation faced by residents, further heightening the risk of starvation amid ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Expressing deep concern over the decision, a WFP spokesperson emphasized the gravity of the situation, acknowledging that suspending deliveries to northern Gaza would undoubtedly lead to a deterioration of conditions, potentially resulting in more lives lost due to hunger. Despite this difficult choice, the organization underscored the imperative of ensuring the safety and security of its staff and beneficiaries, highlighting the necessity of a conducive environment for delivering critical food aid.

The decision comes on the heels of a recent report by another UN agency, UNICEF, which revealed alarming levels of malnutrition among children under the age of two in northern Gaza. Shockingly, the study found that one in six children in this demographic are suffering from malnutrition, with three percent experiencing severe wasting, indicating acute undernourishment. These findings underscore the urgency of addressing food insecurity in the region and the critical need for sustained humanitarian assistance.

The WFP had only recently resumed its food deliveries to Gaza after a three-week suspension prompted by a strike on a UN relief truck and logistical challenges related to humanitarian coordination. Despite efforts to resume operations and alleviate food shortages, the situation on the ground quickly escalated into chaos and violence. In a harrowing account, the WFP described how its convoy, tasked with delivering essential food supplies, encountered desperate crowds clamoring for assistance and facing gunfire upon entering Gaza City.

Tragically, the second convoy's journey northward was marred by incidents of looting and violence, underscoring the breakdown of civil order and the precariousness of humanitarian operations in the region. Multiple trucks were reportedly looted, and a driver was subjected to physical assault, highlighting the dangers faced by aid workers attempting to provide assistance in volatile environments. Despite these challenges, the WFP remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing food insecurity in Gaza and providing vital assistance to vulnerable communities.

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to unfold, the international community must prioritize efforts to alleviate suffering and support initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. The plight of Gaza's residents underscores the urgent need for sustained humanitarian assistance and a concerted diplomatic effort to address the root causes of conflict and insecurity.

The problem isn't only confined to Northern Gaza. And what this article fails to note is that Israel has made it too dangerous for local police to provide security for escorts:

Israel Struck Palestinian Police Escorting Gaza Aid, Says US Envoy

The top U.S. diplomat involved in humanitarian assistance for Gaza said on Friday that Israeli forces earlier this month killed Palestinian police protecting a U.N. aid convoy in the enclave's embattled southern city of Rafah.

As a result, Palestinian police have refused to protect convoys, hampering aid deliveries inside Gaza because of threats from criminal gangs, said David Satterfield, Washington's special regional envoy for humanitarian issues.

“With the departure of police escorts, it has been virtually impossible for the U.N. or anyone else, Jordan, the UAE, or any other implementer to safely move assistance in Gaza because of criminal elements,” Satterfield told an event hosted by the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Sure, and if all the police were removed from a major city and rioting broke out, the lack of police would have nothing to do with it.  And to make it worse, in the case of gaza, there are desperate and starving people as well as criminal gangs. Such nonsense you come up with.

And more nonsense when you claim that it is legitimate to target the police when they are engaged in functions that are not only perfectly legitimate but crucial to Gazans survival. Now if the Israelis were to offer to provide security to convoys, you might have half a point. But they haven't, so you don't.

I would call those comments frank. They were about what you wrote. For a comment to qualify as rude, I think it would have to be personal. Of course, if you take comments about what you write personally, there's nothing I can do about that.

Just out on Al Jazeera. Is any comment needed about such a vile atrocity by israeli troops?

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/2/29/israels-war-on-gaza-live-mass-killing-of-children-in-slow-motion-ngo

At least 112 Palestinians waiting for food aid killed and 760 wounded after being shot at by Israeli forces in Gaza.

“Life draining out of Gaza at terrifying speed,” says UN aid chief Martin Griffiths on aid seeker attack, as death toll in Gaza crosses 30,000-mark.

Meanwhile in the US. One wonders how many deaths of Gazan's is acceptable to the US?

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/2/29/israels-war-on-gaza-live-mass-killing-of-children-in-slow-motion-ngo

The Biden administration has said that “too many Palestinians died today” after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd of people waiting for food assistance in northern Gaza.

History will judge israel and the colluding western governments, and it will not be kind.

Any more such massacres of defenseless people and even gutless western governments may not be able to turn a blind eye any more to israeli attrocities. One can only hope

The BBC are reporting it that most of those killed were ran over by the trucks , rather than being shot by the IDF

"Israel's military said troops fired at some people they thought were a threat.

In the ensuing chaos, the lorries attempted to move forward. A Palestinian witness told the BBC that most of those who died were run over."

Topic Update: Explained: What we know about deadly aid truck incident in northern Gaza

image.png

Conflicting reports have been emerging over a purportedly deadly incident during aid distribution west of Gaza City this morning.

Civilians were gathering to try to get food and medicine from aid trucks, but from there reports began to clash.

Here is everything that has been said about the incident so far.

Gaza health ministry: The Hamas-run ministry claimed 104 people were killed by Israeli fire while waiting for aid at Nabulsi roundabout.

Palestinian president: Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority based in the West Bank, said there was an "ugly massacre conducted by the Israeli occupation army".

Medical facilities: Some in the area reported receiving bodies and severely wounded people with gunshots in the upper part of their bodies.

Hospital chiefs: The head of Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza City, Hussam Abu Safieyah, said it had received 10 bodies and dozens of injured patients.

Head of the hospital's ambulance service, Fares Afana, told the Associated Press that medics arriving at the scene found "dozens or hundreds" lying on the ground.

'Casualty' speaks: A man being treated for a gunshot wound at Shifa Hospital, Kamel Abu Nahel, told the Associated Press he was shot in the leg by the IDF after they opened fire on the crowd twice.

IDF: The Israel Defence Forces said Gazan residents were injured as a result of pushing and trampling as they surrounded the aid trucks and looted them.

Israeli government: An Israeli government spokesperson said the aid truck drivers "ploughed" into the crowd, killing "tens of people".

Israel released footage it said showed crowds surrounding the trucks, in which one truck moved forward slightly while people were either side of it, before stopping again (see our 14.21 post).

Hamas: Hamas released a statement accusing Israel of a targeted "hideous massacre".

From the Guardian. Just how stupid do the israelis think we are to believe a barking excuse like that?

In any event, one needs to look at WHY hundreds/ thousands were trying to get food off the trucks, and that is because, as is common knowledge, israel isn't allowing enough food into Gaza. Whatever the reason they died, no matter if it was 112 or 12 people died, it was IMO caused by israeli crimes against humanity by using starvation as a weapon. Israel will be judged by history, and the millions of Palestinians living outside Palestine will never forget. Israel will IMO have perpetual war as long as it exists.

There were conflicting reports about events leading up to the deaths. Witnesses said Israeli troops fired on a large crowd of Palestinians racing to pull food off an aid convoy, and Gaza’s health ministry described it as a “massacre”. Israel challenged the death toll and said many of the victims were run over by the trucks.

Joe Biden says US to airdrop aid into Gaza as threat to civilians rises
Move follows death of dozens of Palestinians during chaotic delivery of humanitarian goods

The US will begin airdropping food aid into Gaza, US President Joe Biden said on Friday, amid an increasingly acute humanitarian crisis on the ground after months of Israeli attacks in the enclave.
The decision comes as the Biden administration grows increasingly concerned about the threat posed to civilians and as aid shipments in the besieged enclave are severely disrupted, and assistance was failing to reach people most in need...

“We need to do more and the United States will do more and in the coming days, we are going to join with our friends from Jordan and others to provide airdrops of supplies,” Biden said, adding that the US is also exploring the possibility of opening “a marine corridor delivering large amounts of humanitarian assistance”.

Joe Biden Tells Netanyahu 'No Excuses' for Lack of Gaza Aid
President Joe Biden on Friday said there were "no excuses" for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prohibit more humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.

Biden made the comment while hosting a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. His remarks also came as the Associated Press (AP) reported the United States will soon begin air-dropping humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Don't worry, just saw sleepy Joe say he's going to airdrop aid in Gaza.

What a total numbskull, he gives his prime ally bombs to kill them then admits he's screwed up and drops the enemy aid.

Grow a pair Biden and tell Netanyahu to stop the slaughter.

Since when did he admit he screwed up? He's not dropping the enemy aid, the enemy are Hamas, he is dropping aid to civilians.

The US made its first drop today, the UK did one last week along with Jordan and Egypt.

Vile doesn't even touch the sides to describe such moral depravity in the face of mass suffering. Israel is so shameless that  even their erstwhile ally the US is disgusted. The whole world now truly sees what they have become. Evil truly evil.

I don't think people should take anything about this at face value from either the IDF, Al Jazeera, or Hamas.

A question should be asked though -- who gains the most from people thinking IDF did this? Certainly not Israel.

Anyway, I will focus on your as long as it exists snark.

Clearly written by a person that didn't think Israel deserved to exist in the first place.

Thanks for posting that VDO. I had heard that the US was talking about it but I didn't realise it had happened already.

I wonder if Biden had to beg netanyahu for permission or if he finally grew a pair and just did it anyway. It's not like netanyahu hasn't been poking him in the proverbial eye with his arrogant refusal to agree with Biden on everything after the conflict is over.

Whatever, I'd love to be in the israeli "war cabinet room" when they saw all the supplies being dropped. Put a crimp in the plan, didn't it? I wonder if the israeli troops have been ordered to either capture or destroy the aid being dropped.

You've lost the plot completely, Israel have been facilitating these air drops from the beginning.

Israel coordinated airdrops of humanitarian aid into Gaza with five countries, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on February 28. The airdrops, which took place in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, France, and the United States, included 160 packages of food and medical equipment. The airdrops took place in the southern Gaza Strip and supplied a Jordanian field hospital in Khan Younis. The airdrops bypassed the Hamas-controlled Rafah area, which is on the Egyptian border. The IDF released footage showing the airdrops.

Why? A credible report said there were hundreds of gunshot wounds. Your post that I replied to seemed to cast doubt on the perps being the IDF. You are hiding the ball here.

Even one person shot by the IDF would have had the effect of disrupting humitarian assistance of deliberate. A war crime.

The Israelis “have more or less accepted” the framework and now the ball is in Hamas’ court to agree to the terms, a senior U.S. administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the The Associated Press Saturday, a day before talks will continue in Egypt.

The deal, if accepted by all sides, will reportedly include a six-week cease-fire and Hamas would release hostages considered at risk, according to the U.S. official. The framework would also include a larger influx of humanitarian aid into Gaza as thousands of Palestinians, around one-quarter of Gaza’s residents, are a step away from famine, according to a senior U.N. official.

Michael Moore splenetic in his fury at the ongoing Israeli carnage. 5 minutes in if you're busy. Also saying that Biden support for Israel could lose him enough votes in key states to lose against Trump. In the last minutes he is almost in tears of sadness and fury.
