Thai Muslims will begin observing Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024 as announced by the Office of Chularajmontri.

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide. It is a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and fasting from dawn to dusk.

 

During this holy month, Muslims focus on prayer, charity, and abstaining from worldly pleasures to strengthen their connection with God.

Well, that's one way of looking at it.  But they hardly "abstain from worldly pleasures" when they gorge themselves before dawn and after sunset and end up throwing away a lot of wasted food.

Thai Muslims are a significant minority in Thailand with a presence over hundreds of years. Thai Muslims are supported by the Thai Constitution, the highest Office in Thailand and government institutions.

Here in the Top North of Thailand I have virtually no interaction with them, although I did find myself feeling rather sorry for the two little girls who were so heavily veiled in the 7/11 the other day.

Well, I live in the deep south, where for nearly everyone this is an important, if not the most important month of the year.

To the Thai-Malay people of the three province region I would like to express a hearty "Ramadan Mubarak".

they are the luckiest muslims in the world. according to their beliefs god sent them to the world to test them. sharia prevents and forbids all of god's tests. in thailand they are literally being tested for real. no kidding if heaven exists and islam is real you can be sure that thai muslims would be the first people to enter the gates of heaven!

What about during the period of Lent? Surely that's the Christian equivalent. But probably zero then too.

The four Southern provinces are predominantly Muslim Malay, and were ceded to Siam by Britain in the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909.

 

There's always going to be a bit of needle down there given the clash of cultures and the Thais control over what the majority of locals view as sovereign territory.

there are so many version of Islam, and each celebrate Ramadan very specifically. Just as many versions of Judaism and many flavors of Christianity.

It could more easily be argued that the British prevented a wider conflict by keeping a further 11 Malay Sultanates out of Thai control.

We did all hate Germans because of Hitler, not anymore because Germany and its people made a concerted effort to make serious changes after WW2. Would be great if ordinary Muslims and their leaders made an effort and spoke out more often against Islamist’s but they never do. Because so called Jihadists and other radical Islamic groups invoke prophetic traditions and Qur’anic verses to justify their acts from the Koran itself.  Muslims are Muslims first no matter where they are and imo this backwards religion is a menace to the world .

Actually the British handed over the provinces as an incentive to keep the French out of Thailand.
