Gastroscopy Endoscopy

I admit ever since that Pattaya YouTuber passed away from Oesophagus cancer I have been concerned

 

I sometimes get this reflux and heartburn type pain in my high chest and sore throat 

 

Last year I went to a throat specialist who put a tube in my nose and looked in my throat said he found nothing , nothing wrong he said , I said there is something wrong 

 

Today I looked up the symptoms of osapheagus cancer I believe I have some of them and I'm going to the doctor to ask for a gastroscopy or endoscopy, 

 

I wish I was back in Pattaya where I could see that fantastic farang doctor I saw last year , 

Cost me a fortune seeing him everyday but he cured me of  everything 

He sent me to a kidney specialist and wanted to send me to a psychologist to do a brain scan 

Some visits he didn't even charge me for !!!

 

Can anyone tell me about your experience of gastroscopy or endoscopy

 

I noticed the same doctor I went to last week for my colonoscopy does endoscopy too .

 

I may have to get both done , gastroscopy and endoscopy

So you know more than a throat specialist .......that's what is known as hypochondria , 

You seem to have a complaint about everything , maybe a phyciatrist could help....

I love the Intellectual discussion we are having on here about the complex medical procedures that many of us need later in life .

 

One thing I do routinely when I go Thailand is to be medically examined, my GP in Australia for example will only go ONE physical Prostate check per year ,"that's all you need " he said 

 

When I was in Pattaya late last year I went every week  to see Dr Oliver for a prostate check .

 

Sometimes I would be in the waiting room he would open his foir ,"George! And up I would get 

He would immediately say " Prostate check ???

 

Yes doctor I would say 

 

Fantastic doctor,I can't speak highly enough 

 

As we age ,we need to get those checks ,many have left it too late and are at a later stage as evidenced by the many posts on here .

 

Just because you don't have symptoms it doesn't mean don't bother with checks such as colonoscopy or prostate

I too regularly get my prostate checked while in Pattaya. Generally on soi 6. Does Dr Oliver work in that bar where they all dress up in nurse's outfits?

Perhaps the OP does not realize these repeated tests make more money for the doctor, and also increase the risk of acquiring infections.

The most common cause of acid reflux/heartburn is GERD, look it up.

 

The valve at the top of your stomach weakens in middle age and allows acid to leak back into your gullet/oesophagus. Also some nasty bacteria called h.pylori can exacerbate it, as can alcohol, lying flat when you sleep.

Endoscopy refers to investigations at either end of the body. Mouth : gastroscopy ; bottom end : sigmoidoscopy; colonoscopy.

 Gastroscopy is a painless procedure but can feel uncomfortable. You might have seen at Circuses, men pushing long swords down their neck. But they practice it. One problem is your cough reflex during the procedure and anxiety, plus discomfort. For this you’re given minor sedation for pain relief and sedative effects. The needle will remain in your arm until you’re discharged. They can top you up if needed.

Everyone pain and anxiety thresholds vary according to several factors.

Anyway it’s merely an investigative procedure to rule out cancer. They will take samples and later reveal a  bacteria, helicobacter  pylori. But the symptoms that this causes don’t match yours.

 

With colonoscopy however they can perform treatment at the same time if they see polyps on the colon, by removing them painlessly, under sedation of course.

 

No harm in having investigations done as you get older. Once a year Health Check up is usually enough for most. You get a shopping list of procedures and you can add or subtract.

 

If your PSA is high and MRI shows no cancer you will be advised to not bother with further PSA checks!

 

But in your situation, there were two other suggestions made that you should pursue:

 

Firstly, get checked for the GERD, and secondly if all fails,it will be worthwhile to see a psychologist. It could be psychosomatic, in that your symptoms are real but their origin lies elsewhere. And you won’t be able to figure it out yourself and will needlessly be distressed.

There are various strategies one can use to avoid the necessity for  medication with gastric reflux.

Every pill puts an extra burden on the kidneys and liver.
