Police have arrested two men and seized 9.56 million methamphetamine pills with an estimated value of more than 500 million baht during a raid on a makeshift shelter in Saraburi province. The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau announced on 26 July that officers arrested Komsan, 30, and Thannawat, 45, at an unnumbered shelter in Nong Khaem subdistrict, Nong Khae district. Investigators allege the location was being used to store drugs before they were transported for distribution into inner areas of Thailand. Investigation led to storage site According to police, the operation stemmed from an investigation launched earlier this year after narcotics suppression officers arrested members of a major drug trafficking network and confiscated a large quantity of drugs. Investigators said the network allegedly transported narcotics into Bangkok and neighbouring provinces before concealing them at temporary storage locations. Further enquiries reportedly revealed that the two suspects collected shipments from a major trafficker who used a van to move the drugs. Police allege the methamphetamine was hidden at the Saraburi shelter in an attempt to avoid detection before being redistributed. After placing the suspects under surveillance and tracking their movements, officers identified the shelter as a suspected drug warehouse and carried out the raid, seizing all 9.56 million methamphetamine pills. Wider network still under investigation Police believe the drugs had been stored at the site specifically for onward distribution and say efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other members of the network. Komsan and Thannawat have been charged with jointly possessing and distributing Category 1 narcotics, namely methamphetamine, without permission. Police allege the offences were committed for commercial purposes and in a manner capable of widespread distribution that threatened public safety or state security. Legal proceedings are continuing.
