Europe baked in ‘extreme heat stress’ pushing temperatures to record highs

Europe has recently been engulfed in a relentless wave of scorching temperatures, leading to unprecedented levels of "extreme heat stress" across the continent. A joint report by the EU's Copernicus Earth-watching service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed that heat-trapping pollutants have fueled a surge in temperatures, resulting in record highs last year.

 

According to the report, Europeans are grappling with soaring temperatures during the day and uncomfortable warmth at night, leading to a staggering 30% increase in deaths from hot weather over the past two decades. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized the urgent need for climate action, stressing that the consequences of inaction far outweigh the costs of proactive measures.

 

 

Throughout 2023, Europe experienced temperatures above average for 11 months, with September marking the warmest on record. The relentless heat and dry conditions fueled devastating wildfires that ravaged villages and blanketed distant cities with smoke, particularly in drought-stricken southern regions like Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Greece faced its largest wildfire ever recorded, scorching 96,000 hectares of land.

 

In addition to wildfires, heavy rainfall triggered deadly floods across Europe, with one-third of the continent's river network surpassing the "high" flood threshold and one-sixth reaching "severe" levels. Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus climate change service, highlighted the importance of data in preparing for the impacts of climate change as temperatures continue to rise.

 

While the link between global heating and heavy rainfall remains complex, the connection with heatwaves is unequivocal. The report underscored the significant role of fossil fuel emissions in exacerbating heat-related deaths, with estimates suggesting an alarming increase in mortality rates.

 

The report's release coincides with a landmark ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, which deemed Switzerland's weak climate policy a violation of human rights. This ruling sets a precedent for holding European governments accountable for enacting policies to mitigate climate change and limit global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels.

 

Ana Raquel Nunes, an assistant professor specializing in health and the environment, emphasized the urgency of incorporating health considerations into climate policy to protect future generations. Meanwhile, the report also highlighted a positive development: a record-breaking amount of electricity generated from renewable sources, signaling progress towards sustainable energy solutions.

 

However, climate scientists caution that without decisive action to transition away from fossil fuels, heatwaves will continue to intensify, posing a grave threat to vulnerable populations. The report serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for concerted efforts to combat climate change and safeguard the well-being of communities across Europe and beyond.

Goodness. I left Europe in 1985 unable to see much of a future for my kids in the UK under the vile Thatcher. I wouldn't fancy living there now without huge a/c units next to me 24/7, and the cost would be outrageous unless you lived ion a small hovel.

We need huge AC units here! We spent last August in Slovakia. Never really needed AC as we were mostly in the mountains. Roads were great. Traffic easy. Hiking trails everywhere. Great people. Absolutely loved it and going back next week to escape the crazy heat here!

There's no better time to travel outside the country then April in Thailand. I am going to be traveling too and hopefully when we get back the weather will be a little cooler, and the rains would have started. This heat is incredible.

Ahem! Thailand will be one of the most affected countries, by extreme heat, floods, and rising sea level. In particular, if you own a property in Bangkok and want to transmit it to your descendants, you'd better check where it is located. On top of it, the city is slowly sinking.

Mortality, however, is not a useful measure of the number or severity of weather-related events including the floods, droughts, storms, wildfire, and extreme temperatures listed in the graph, experts told Reuters.

Although deaths from these disasters have decreased, due in part to better forecasting and preparedness, the number, intensity, and cost of climatic and meteorological hazards have all increased over the last hundred years.

At the same time there are news that many of the weather stations they refer to were dismantled years ago already, but they are still supplying temperatures. They admitted that the temperatures these non-existing weather stations are 'estimated' now. What a hoax!

Summer in London was very oppressive due to the stuffy heat, and that was over 13 years ago.

 

I wonder when they will start blaming Putin for it?
