I would never physically attack a driver (first), but imagining this was me, I would rather accept the meeting, resolve this with a wai (and probably some money), and get on with my holiday, rather than risk jail and deportation...

Why does everybody seem to believe the tuktuk driver.  Like they never lie and cheat tourists.  I used to live in Phuket and was constantly being shortchanged around the island.  Something that doesn't really happen elsewhere in Thailand for some strange reason. 

 

In Phuket you have to say the denomination as you hand it over, making sure it is clearly understood, then stand and count your change right in front of them.  Never, ever put the change in your pocket without checking.  9 time out of 10, they will just reach back under the counter and hand you your correct change without a fuss.  The more emboldened ones, such as tuktuk drivers, will put up a fuss because they know where they stand on the island....they have been pulling this bull<deleted> since tourists have been going there. 

 

Doesn't make attacking him very clever or right, but I can understand the urge when they pull this nonsense.

I would define scam as paying a 400bht bill with a 1000bht note, and being given 100bht change ............... "no, you gave me a 500bht note". Probably the most common taxi/bar scam in Thailand.

 

How many times a day can you afford to lose a tenner?

A new 7-11 opened in October near us, staff there say the note amount whenever a customer hands over a 500 or 1000.

 

Often a pause as they figure out how to tell me my change amount, for their language practice in English.

 

Admit I have at times made errors in mixing a 1000 in with 100s.

That's why they get paid what they do.

 

She studied hard for 7 years, got her masters degree and is now basically richer and more successful than all of her peers.

Moral of the story - you get back out what you put in.
