DMS Launches New Home Testing Kits for Cervical Cancer

The Thai Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) is urging women between the ages of 30 and 60 to regularly get screened for cervical cancer. This comes after reports reveal that around 10 million sexually active Thai women have never been tested for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer.

 

Cervical cancer is among the most common cancers affecting Thai women, with about 15 new cases being diagnosed daily and around 2,200 deaths annually. DMS Director-General Dr Yongyot Thammawut emphasized the necessity of regular screenings to significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

 

Despite the Health Ministry's advice for women over 30 to have a cervical cancer screening every five years, the adherence to this recommendation remains low. In Bangkok alone, only 30,000 women go for HPV screening tests each year, marking the lowest rate in the entire country.

 

In a bid to address these issues and enhance testing accessibility, the DMS is introducing free HPV DNA self-sampling kits. Eligible women registered with the National Health Security Office can get these kits via the "Pao Tang" app or designated pickup locations.

 

The self-sampling initiative, which is private and user-friendly, aims to encourage more women to participate in regular cervical cancer screening. This is particularly aimed at those who were previously reluctant to go for conventional tests at hospitals or healthcare centers.

Good idea, for those too busy working to go for a test, they can pick-up a kit and do it at home.

Let's hope the test kits are quality unlike some recent test kits for something else. Cervical cancer was the beginning of the end for my mother. She actually had a keyhole hysterectomy surgery which was quite new at the time resulting a vastly shorter recovery time but sadly it was as I say the beginning of the end. She was in her late 80's at the time and died at the age of 93.

Great, but.  Which strains of HPV does this kit test for.   For memory there are about 70-odd strains of HPV, with strains HPV 16 and HPV 18 indicating a high risk of developing cervical cancer.
