Netflix Stand-up Comedian Criticized for Misinterpreting Thai Philosophy

Sonthiya Sawasdee, a former advisor to the Parliamentary Commission on Law, Justice, and Human Rights, has lodged a complaint against Udom Taepanich, famously known as Nose, over his Netflix stand-up comedy special named Diew Special Super Soft Power. Sawasdee alleges that the content of the program might contain misleading content on Thailand's Sufficiency Economy philosophy.

The Netflix special, streamed to its 91 million subscribers, is being scrutinized over concerns it might misrepresent the Thai economic philosophy. On May 6, Sawasdee formally presented his complaint to the Metropolitan Police Bureau Commander, Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, requesting an investigation into Udom's performance.

His main concerns were the authenticity of Udom's information, its alignment with the Thai economic approach, and the potential impact of the misinformation on public understanding of this economic principle.

The Sufficiency Economy philosophy, integral to Thai culture, encourages moderation, prudence, and self-immunity for sustainable development. Sawasdee is keen on whether Nose’s comic delivery might have distorted the essence of this philosophy in his Netflix show.

Sawasdee's complaint is prompted by the thought that Udom might have made a mockery of the philosophy for entertainment value. The probe he's requested hopes to establish if Udom discussed the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, if his content was doctored for humor, and if such distorting information could cause public misunderstanding.

Udom, famous for his comic touch, perhaps didn't foresee that his program would cause such intense reaction. His show, attracting millions of Netflix viewers, is critically analyzed for its adherence to Thai values.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau has not yet commented on the issue. This situation underscores the thin line between freedom of speech and respect for culture in a country where entertainment and educational content often merge.

The investigation will reveal if Udom's content was a harmless joke or an insult to a respected national principle, according to Khaosod.

Maybe he could have got away with it if he'd included a fat ladyboy, a bald man and a few gongs and whistles.

From what I understand, he didn't misinterpret anything, in fact, he was spot on,  and therein lies the problem..   And now he has p!ssed off a bunch of thin-skinned old people..

Considering no one can really define the "Sufficiency Economy Philosophy", and it can be used to mean pretty much anything, it is startling that someone, anyone wishes to constrain comedic performances.

You hardly hear the term "Sufficiency Economy" anymore, probably for good reason.

I'm surprised he didn't get in trouble for mocking "Soft Power".

Along with canned laughter interspersed with the gongs and whistles.

To be serious for a moment. The "Sufficiency Economy" is very much associated with the late King.

Taking the pee out of His ideas was bound to result in outrage (genuine, or faux), so it's no surprise that a complaint has been filed.

Of course, it is possible that the comedy sketch was intended to cause outrage. No publicity is bad publicity - as the saying goes.

Always a misunderstanding.... unless it affects Thailand.

He's a brilliant comedian.

King Bhumiphol ( RIP ) invented this philosophy .

Good and sustainable , it was more or less ignored after his death .

The present government clearly has different goals .

The "Sufficiency Economy" was very well defined by the former King of Thailand, which is why they're so touchy about it...

Seems to me, Sawasdee sees his fellow Citizens as too stupid to differ between comedy and reality.

Also there might be some truth in his comedy😂

Lodging a complaint with the police over a comedy routine. It does not get more surly and inane than that. Who are these people?

The Thai official's reaction is the biggest joke of all.

Insulting a principle, hurt its feelings, its dignity and its pride...

I think Sonthiya Sawasdee just unwittingly provided "the Nose" with a treasure trove of comedic material. Well done Mr. Pompous Official.

In danger of offending against s.112. The comedian is being warned: Take care whose toes you trample on.

For the peasants, yes. Kind of rich coming from a fellow  whose wealth was estimated at $30 billion USD.

Two accurate translations of the concept are:

1)Know your place and stay in it.

2)Do as I say, not as I do.

Fairly sure Sonthiya Sawasdee will be covered in gold and has a very, very nice house and probably a merc or two so as always the one's who complain the loudest are the big mouth hypocrites as moderation is one of the three key pillars of this philosophy.

prostitution, drugs, corruption... that is thailand , and pollution and 40 deaths on the roads per day

Yes, moderation of ambition in the poor and moderation of the speech of the poor by the rich.

Look, in 1974 this was an interesting concept, a "middle path" of sorts. Fifty years later? Seems a bit anachronistic, if not wildly patronizing.

You hit the nail on the head. I'm amazed that a wealthy person could spout this philosophy while maintaining a straight face.

In many ways it's analogous to the climate change rhetoric. Most supporters are of above the average educational level and financial means, and live high consumption lifestyles.  Cut out the people at the very top and it still skews towards the affluent-who do the vast majority of consuming and give  birth to more heavy consumers.

Oddly, they come out spewing "facts" and statistics of dubious origin, yet never reveal what they've done to alleviate the problem they largely contribute to.  Plenty of preaching which overlaps the vague concept of "sustainability" while leaving us to infer that accepting totalitarianism is the only path to saving the planet.

The Thai philosophy leads to more resources for the wealthy to consume at the expense of the planet and the working class. Pre "climate change" climate change propaganda.
