Economic Concerns Erode Biden’s Support Among Key Voter Groups

President Biden's re-election campaign faces significant challenges as recent polling indicates declining support among crucial voter demographics, driven primarily by economic dissatisfaction. A combination of inflation, economic pessimism, and a perception of poor economic management has contributed to Biden's lowest approval ratings in nearly two years.

Declining Approval Ratings

The latest Reuters-Ipsos tracking poll reveals Biden's approval rating at just 36 percent, matching the lowest point of his presidency. This decline is particularly evident among voters under 30, Black voters, and Hispanic voters, who have traditionally been strong supporters of the Democratic Party. Emerson polling shows alarming drops: only 26 percent of voters under 30 approve of Biden’s performance, along with 55 percent of Black voters and 33 percent of Hispanic voters.

Rising Support for Trump

In a striking shift, these traditionally Democratic groups are increasingly open to supporting Donald Trump. The Emerson poll indicates that Trump leads Biden among voters in their 30s by 4 points, a reversal from the 2020 election. Among Black and Hispanic voters, while Biden maintains a lead, his support has weakened significantly. CNN polling shows Trump's support among Black voters at 22 percent, with Biden's support falling from 81 percent in 2020 to 69 percent.

Economic Perceptions

The primary driver behind this shift appears to be economic concerns. Inflation and economic pessimism have plagued Biden's presidency. Despite a strong job market, with unemployment below 4 percent for an extended period, many Americans perceive the economy negatively. The Reuters-Ipsos poll highlights a preference for Trump’s economic policies over Biden’s by a 10-point margin (40 percent to 30 percent).

Misconceptions About Economic Indicators

Misconceptions about key economic indicators further complicate the perception of Biden’s economic management. Despite the S&P 500's strong performance—up nearly 24 percent in 2023 and more than 10 percent in 2024—49 percent of Americans believe it is negative for the year. Similarly, half of Americans think unemployment is at a 50-year high, despite historically low rates.

Blame for Inflation

Inflation remains a significant issue. The Guardian-Harris poll shows that a majority of Americans blame the Biden administration for rising prices, with 58 percent attributing the perceived negative state of the economy to mismanagement. Even among Democrats, 39 percent believe Biden is worsening the economy, and 49 percent think the U.S. is in a recession.

Broader Concerns Beyond the Economy

Beyond economic issues, Biden struggles to convince voters of his successes in other areas. On immigration, Trump’s policies are preferred by a 17-point margin (42 percent to 25 percent), and on managing foreign conflicts and national security, Trump leads 36 percent to 29 percent according to the Reuters poll.

Strategic Implications for the Biden Campaign

The erosion of support among key voter groups and the overwhelming concern about economic issues present significant hurdles for Biden's re-election campaign. Despite these challenges, it is important to note that Trump remains a highly divisive figure, dealing with multiple criminal trials and a fractured GOP base. The importance of the economy in election outcomes cannot be overstated. Persistent inflation and the resulting economic pessimism have undermined Biden’s standing, even among his core supporters. If these trends continue, Trump’s chances of returning to the White House could increase significantly.

A brief and well-written article. I was expecting to read a biased, CNN-MSNBC-style of anti-Trump article. Thank you for not writing their kind of rubbish!

Blaming the victims, LOL.

In general, people don't believe statistics when the evidence is in front of their eyes. Stats can reflect anything depending on the one that put them out there. Some of us know the saying, by Twain "Lies, damned lies and statistics".

What people are seeing is not what the weasles in back rooms are inventing to try and fool the public into voting for their man.

Maybe key voters can see that this man has no brain left, falls off his bike, farts in public, cannot find his way off the stage, mumbles, makes up words, says his uncle was eaten by  cannibals, grew up in every ethnic neighbourhood, attended every denomination church, support black rights while friending racists, says blacks aint black if they do not support him, talks to dead people, looks for dead people, needs an escort to the helicopter to hide his walking................................

The whole world is laughing at this carcass of a guy.

I was no fan of Obama, but at least the guy on the left had some energy.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The thing that boggles me is that some think he is better than the other geriatric trying for the crown. Two old men railing against each other.

I support Trump over Biden but I didn't want him to be standing at all.

Many misconception about the economy.

- Any broad measure of the economy shown Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been growing not shrinking as the many believe

- 49% believe the S&P 500 stock market index is down for the year, though index were up about 24% in 2023 and is up more than 12% this year

- some believe that unemployment is at a 50 year high, though the unemployment rate has been under 4%, a near 50 year low.

- Many think inflation is increasing. In reality, the rate of inflation has fallen sharply from its post covid peak of 9.1% and has been down to 3-4% this year.

Most of the misconception is in the Republicans side. It is a concern for Biden but not worrying. Still 6 months till election and for the Biden's campaign to be better at messaging.

The harsh reality is that one needs a marketable skill or talent to benefit from the current world economy. All developed nations are experiencing a bifurcation that is creating lots of Haves and lots of Have Nots. Debt levels will make it increasingly tough to carry the deadwood. With AI coming on at lightspeed pace, it's not going to get any easier. Unskilled labor is being obviated, and technology is moving up the foodchain, soon to be obviating many white collar jobs.

Nostalgia is funny, because the last guy spent 4 years lying about 'best economy ever', when it wasn't even close.

Growth under Biden has been the best since the late 1990s. Again, one needs a skill to benefit. That leaves out a vast majority of those who favor the R candidate. They live a false hope that their guy actually has a plan to improve things. How? Maybe kick out Dreamers and other recent migrants, which will free up strawberry picking jobs for his voters? He has no clue how to run a business, never mind a $30 trillion economy. The 'billionaire' has to sell a small jet for $10 million to pay his legal bills.

It was Biden who actually passed an Infrastructure Bill. It was Biden who got the Chips Act passed. Under Biden the US has seen 27 straight months of UE below 4%, the first time since the 1960s. Remember the last guy came in with 4.8% UE and left Biden 6.8% and an exploding deficit.

With AI coming, those suffering now are going to look back on the Biden years as 'the good old days'.

biden will go down as a traitor to democracy , along with his party of Cultural  Marxist.
Obama:

"Don't underestimate Joe's ability to <deleted> things up."

“One Democrat who is neutral in the 2020 race and spoke to Obama about Biden's gaffe-prone nature recalled the former president saying: "Don't underestimate Joe's ability to  eff things up."

So, the people are finally beginning to see the Putz they have in office now. I am favoring neither party but understand why Bidens ratings are declining in his Democratically controlled states. People are seeing him for what he really is and what he has failed to do during his presidency. Trumps rise is just another facet of this. When he was Prez te economy was good. Unemployment was low and the country was not dishing out billions or tax money to allow and keep and support so many illegals entering the country. I do not know if Trump will win. But really think sure Biden will lose in the elections.

That party deceived Americans in the the 2020 race by keeping biden in

in his basement!

Now  Americans see his failed policy making, the world is upside down.

Chaos at the border,at the grocery store and foreign policy!

Lets not forget his supporters on college campuses being exposed too.

Chants of death to America , pulling down flags & anti Semitic rhetoric .

methinks
