Bangkok Residents Alarmed by Man's Nightly Chanting, Seek Intervention

A Bangkok community is in distress over a man's nightly rituals, including chanting loudly and lighting 99 candles, fearing fire hazards and safety risks. Residents have now sought help from authorities and media to address the issue.

 

The 41-year-old man claims to be a disciple of a mystical entity, supposedly endowed with supernatural powers. His nocturnal activities, such as singing the national anthem and placing candles around his body, coupled with occasional street bathing in just underwear, have unsettled the neighbourhood.

 

Though he remains polite and non-aggressive, his actions have sparked concerns for his mental well-being. Locals suspect potential drug use and worry about both communal safety and his well-being. They have appealed for mental health treatment to prevent his condition from deteriorating further.

 

The man acknowledges his nightly rituals, linking his faith in the mystical entity to a past incident where he survived a gunshot wound. Demonstrating his chanting to the media, he expressed that these practices bring him peace and security.

 

His 72-year-old father disclosed his long-standing struggles with drug addiction since the age of 20, leading to severe mental health issues. Despite spending over 15,000 baht monthly on treatments for more than a year, there has been no improvement. The family has already faced significant financial strain, including compensating for fire damages caused by the man previously.

 

 

 

Currently living in a street tent, his nightly activities persist, though they do not provide him with money to avoid enabling drug purchases. He survives off food from local temples but somehow obtains tobacco.

 

Local authorities and the Ministry of Public Health have been alerted to arrange psychiatric treatment. Additionally, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is being contacted for potential housing and welfare assistance.

 

As of now, the man has been taken into custody for treatment. A search found no illegal drugs, just tobacco, talcum powder, a wallet, and personal items.

 

The community hopes that with adequate care, the man's condition will improve, restoring peace and safety to the neighbourhood.
