Fish farmers in the Betong District of Yala Province are facing massive losses due to the unexplained death of thousands of Nile Tilapia fish. The Yala Provincial Fisheries Office team is investigating the cause of the disturbing incident, which started on July 2nd.

Restaurateur Santi Jongkiatkhajorn (also known as Ko Ngiew), his workers, and his son Samart Jongkiatkhajorn have already found approximately 5,000 dead fish. They predict the total number to be anything from 10,000 to 20,000. The farmers are using the dead fish as fertilizer or shipping them off to a burial pit.

Initial suspicions point towards harmful inflow into their fish farming stream. This could be due to cement water or vehicle or equipment rinse-off finding its way into the stream. This event is not the first. A similar incident occurred during construction work upstream in May of last year.

The financial impact of this episode is estimated to range between 2 million and 3 million baht. This particular type of tilapia, known as Pla Nil Sai Nam Lai, is a high-quality product from this region and is farmed in a circulating water system. The system allows the fish to remain active, resulting in lean, sweet, firm, and odorless fish, which some prefer to consume raw.

Three fish farmers currently use the polluted stream, two of whom are already facing the dive's impact. The third is expected to experience effects soon. Ko Ngiew is urging authorities to discover the cause promptly. He warns that he might need to shutter his fish farming and restaurant businesses if such events continue due to lack of additional investment funds.

Doesn't seem that they are to concerned about farming in a polluted stream.
