Only winners to come out of this will be the police who can get an amount of bribes back. And maybe the God squad who think they they will somehow get bonus points. 
 

Lost tax revenue, lost tourism revenue, and most importantly loss of personal freedom. So long as the people using cannabis are adults why should the government have domain over what they can put in their bodies?

We saw with the "scamdemic" the extent pharmaceutical  companies will go to, most notably paying kickbacks to medical professionals and advertising revenue to mass media outlets, to push their so-called "vaccine" onto the world's population. Millions have either died or been injured by this "medical procedure".

 

Turn now to the historical use (notible in Thailand going back 100s of years) of cannabis as a cheap and proven treatment for all sorts of ailments, something pharmaceutical don't like because they want you to spend your money on their expensive drugs.

 

My initial thoughts when Thailand first legalized cannibis use was great- finally a government giving a middle finger to the pharmaceutical industry. This latest development is a disappointment. Maybe the excuse to  reclassify cannabis and hemp as illegal narcotics because of "recreational use" is just that: an excuse. I do wonder if any politicians who support this reclassification are also getting kickbacks from the pharmaceutical industry.

Had this been thought through in the first instance then the situation may well have been different.  Sell the stuff openly by all means but use it privately, only the other day a farang gentleman was openly smoking outside the door of a 7/11 and we have a pizza take away and cannabis joint close by with a few old sofas thrown inside and resembling an opium den the owner wonders why he doesn't sell many pizzas only to the few with the munchies? The ministry had already drafted a bill that stopped short of making it totally prohibited but made recreational use illegal but subject to a fine, not imprisonment.  Then in walks Tony still upset with the dealers that supplied his son with coke and other substances and suddenly there is a flip flop based on the wishes of one man who is now running the country from behind the scenes.  

 

It makes Thailand a laughing stock in the West and eliminates all the GDP contribution, employment and tax revenue from the industry, as well as Thailand's potential contribution to development of knowledge of medical marijuana. 

 

Not mentioned in the article is that the final decision rests with the committee of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board of which Anutin is still chairman.  But probably nothing he can do to stand up to Tony - yet. However, the elite forces that did a big deal with Tony to get him off his prisons sentences seem to be very dissatisfied with his immediate reneging on his agreement to stay out of politics, as he behaves openly as shadow PM.  He may get his comeuppance, as his popularity is waning fast and he doesn't resonate at all with young voters who see him as an irrelevant old geezer from the past who sold out to the establishment to come home.  His daughter and the feeble nominee PM are even less popular.

I don't think the impetus comes from the drug companies in this case. There are parties that benefit more directly from recriminalization.  It is more likely to come from the police who used to make big money from smuggling and dealing ganja in the past, as well as from shaking down backpackers found smoking a joint sold to them by police.

This is an enormous and historic step backwards for the nation. Reform is reform, regression is regression, and this current administration has shown that they stand for backwards movement, lack of progress, and granting the RTP franchisees full reign and full license to collect everything possible and fleece the public.

 

This has nothing to do with public health. Alcohol is infinitely more dangerous than cannabis and so are the highways, yet they do nothing about either of those two hazards. They allow the highway patrol to insist on never patrolling the highways and never doing their jobs properly.

Do they really think that people will stop using cannabis because they say so? Are they really that naive? Have they even considered that a program of education regarding the potential down sides might actually be a far more effective way of protecting public health? Do they not realise that illegal weed is far more of a threat to public health because it is unregulated and therefore usually contains pesticides at levels that really ought be illegal? Are they aware of the damage, stress, harm and suffering they are going to cause?

 

Weed was everywhere before decriminalisation. Weed will be everywhere after reclassification, most likely even more so than before. Otherwise law abiding citizens will suffer because of this. One has to question either the motives or the competence of these lawmakers. They're either living in a fantasy world or they are pandering to corporate interests, there is no doubt.
