Anutin Furious Over Move to Reclassify Cannabis as a Narcotic

Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as the Minister of Interior, has vehemently opposed the Health Ministry's plan to categorize cannabis as a controlled substance once again.

This move, proposed by the same committee that had earlier recommended its decriminalization during Anutin's tenure as the Minister of Public Health, marks a significant pivot in the government's stance on cannabis, stirring substantial controversy.

Anutin expressed his severe dissatisfaction, arguing that such a reversal could undermine the faith of investors and destabilize the burgeoning cannabis industry in Thailand.

During his previous role in public health, his administration promoted cannabis for medical and economic purposes, a policy that diverges sharply from the current trajectory suggested by the Health Ministry.

This disagreement highlights a larger issue of policy inconsistency within the government that Anutin emphasized could potentially deter investment and economic growth. He stressed the importance of stable and predictable government policies to maintain investor confidence and support economic development, reported Naew Na.

Moreover, Anutin warned that frequent policy changes, driven by political expediencies rather than evidence-based decision-making, could not only confuse stakeholders but also adversely affect the broader economic landscape of Thailand.

His powerful critique comes at a critical time as the government contemplates this controversial policy reversal, placing not just the cannabis sector but also overall national economic interests at risk.

This unfolding conflict underscores deep divisions within the government regarding drug policy and economic strategy, reflecting not only on the current administration’s approach to governance but also on its ability to foster a stable investment climate.

And Tony needs Anutin more than Anutin needs Tony. If Anutin pulls BJP votes from ay the givernments budget votes, then the government coalition will fail.

The idiots who allowed this medical charlatan into that position in the first place should be strung up from the nearest tree.

for once I am in total agreement with Anutin.

It would/will be a catastrophic step in the wrong direction if Thailand chooses to go ahead with this.

So all drugs out right? Or are we veing selective? A drug is defined as any substances that alters the bodies natural balance and chemistry?

Billy the Kid died too, and sheriff Pat Garrett is just as notorious.

Anutin should never have held a Health Minister position in the first place.

They have a great philosophy and business model. For  fledgling business into bakruptcy, tax foreigners who bring in billions, they say thailand is #6 place for retiring expats.

https://aseannow.com/topic/1331928-thailand-ranks-6th-best-for-expats/

They need to convince us of this, but when people considering retiring here look at the tax scheme... if i bring in 800k for my retirement visa i get taxed... lets say 10%. I then need 80k to make up for the taxes. I get taxed on the 80k... and so on...

They chase away tourists who wish to travel here and enjoy a toke...

They will legalise casinos to attract tourists when in fact thais already are compulsive gamblers who ruin their families with this addiction, they support the booze and cigarette monopolies because they get kickbacks.

This place, were it not for my wife and the hurdles i have to jump to get her to canada, makes me want to puke now.

Things have surely devolved in the 20 odd years i have been here

The list never ends... Brave New taxin World

Uh-oh, they've stirred up the sleeping giant. The big guns are out now. Neck-Brace-Tony take heed.

Ooooo. Fancy words now. Flip-flops and U-turns works for me.

He should probably go easy on the furiousness. Not good for his ticker.

But, hey man! What about the buzz? No Anutin, no ganja! He was the best health minister ever...... Peace out!

Anutin’s family is connected to businesses that stand to benefit from the legalization and commercialization of cannabis. For instance, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, a company founded by Anutin’s father, is involved in various sectors, including agriculture and pharmaceuticals, which intersects with the cannabis industry.

Did that hit him in the pocketbook I wonder?  🤔

Something Thailand does with regularity.

HI Anitin. How about you pay the shop owners compensation from your own pocket since you pushed them  (fooled them) to open shop knowing full well that "legally", because of the momentary loophole in the law, is just an empty "mirage" word.

On this issue I entirely agree with Anutin. It would send all the wrong messages to potential investors to now flip-flop back from partial de-criminalisation to full re-criminalisation.

Yes you're right, but some people like the altering.  BTW are you muslim?

And he should be furious and millions of other people should be furious, especially the people who have invested a fortune in stores, counting on the support of the government. This is likely the only thing that Anutin has done in his political career that was beneficial to Thailand and the people.

And now the proxy dinosaurs are trying to erase that progress.

Two ministers stood by a river. One said, "The policy flows like the river, ever-changing with the tides of politics." The other said, "The policy must be like a rock, steadfast and reliable to support the people."

The Prime Minister observed and said, "Is it the river that flows, or the rock that stands still, or is it our minds caught between the two?"

Burn a blunt and reflect on this and its meaning: How do the concepts of change and stability interact? What does it mean for a policy to be both flexible and reliable? How does this balance impact governance and trust?
