Fierce Gunfight in Mae Ai Mountains: Six Killed, Over a Million Drug Pills Seized
Picture courtesy of Thai Rath. In a dramatic confrontation in the Mae Ai mountain region of Chiang Mai province, six individuals were killed in a gunfight with Thai military forces. The clash took place late at night when soldiers intercepted a group of suspected drug traffickers attempting to smuggle a massive cache of narcotics across the border. According to reports from military officials, a patrol unit from the 3207 and 3209 battalions was dispatched to monitor suspected drug smuggling routes along the natural border at Huai Nam Yen village, Mae Ai district. Acting on intelligence reports, the patrol team was tasked with preventing illegal activities in the region, including drug trafficking, under Thailand's strict anti-narcotics laws. At approximately 23:15, the military patrol encountered a group of 7 to 10 men carrying modified backpacks. When the soldiers attempted to stop and search the individuals, they were met with gunfire from the group. A fierce exchange of fire ensued, lasting about 5 to 10 minutes. Due to the intensity of the nighttime firefight, the military secured the area overnight before proceeding with a full investigation at dawn. Upon inspection, authorities discovered six bodies and 13 backpacks containing an estimated 1,300,000 methamphetamine pills. The military has requested additional support to clear the area and ensure no other members of the smuggling group remain at large. This deadly incident highlights the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in northern Thailand, which shares a porous border with neighboring countries known for drug production. Thai authorities have ramped up efforts to crack down on smugglers using these remote mountainous routes to transport large quantities of drugs into the country. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify the deceased and track down the remaining members of the smuggling ring. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe -

Can you defend yourself?
I don't care whether you buy it or not, just saying that fighting is not an option if at all possible. I am glad I learned it early in life as it has made it eary to avoid any repetitive activity. -

Thai gov. to tax (remitted) income from abroad for tax residents starting 2024 - Part II
It never "becomes savings." @chiang maihas explained this very well. But it is income you gained in a year you were not a tax resident, no need to pay tax on it (first Q&As of TRD, 9.) (For double security, I would remit it in a year I am not a tax resident, either. @sometimewoodworkerhas criticized this as unnecessary. He is right, of course. I am just too anxious)- 1

Thailand will lose fat there. Well-off pensioners and foreigners with wealth will pay attention to how long they stay in Thailand in the future. Under 180 days and they will have no longer any problems. There are also other beautiful, sunny countries where they can spend there money. It is incomprehensible, since Thailand in particular wants to be attractive for this well off groups. Probably no one in the RD has calculated how high the consumption tax and capital import loss will be. A week ago, Thailand announced that it wanted to become the new financial hub in SEA in the future. LOL. Greedy amateurs.- 3
