Heavy rain to hit 49 provinces, including Bangkok this evening

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across 49 provinces, affecting the northern, northeastern, eastern, southern regions, as well as Bangkok, with 70% of the area expected to experience storms this afternoon and evening.

 

Weather forecasts for the next 24 hours indicate that a moderate monsoon trough is sweeping through upper northern and northeastern Thailand, moving towards a low-pressure area in upper Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin. Additionally, the prevailing southwesterly monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Meanwhile, an easterly and southwesterly wind convergence zone is affecting the upper northeastern region. These conditions are expected to bring heavy rainfall to the northern, upper northeastern, central, eastern, and southern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity.

Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious of heavy rain and accumulated rainfall that could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in foothill regions near waterways and low-lying areas.

 

The TMD has specifically warned that 48 provinces across four regions, including Bangkok, will be heavily impacted by thunderstorms. In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, sea waves are expected to reach heights of approximately 1 metre, with waves reaching over 2 metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to avoid sailing in stormy areas.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Omphul is situated southeast of Japan and is expected to pass through the eastern part of the country. This typhoon is not expected to affect the weather conditions in Thailand. However, travellers planning to visit the aforementioned areas are advised to check the weather conditions before their trip.

The northern region will experience thunderstorms and heavy rain in 70% of the area, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Tak, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celcius, with highs of 31 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

 

Other regions

 

The northeastern region will also see thunderstorms and heavy rain in 70% of the area, especially in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27°C, with highs of 32 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

In the central region, thunderstorms and heavy rain are predicted for 60% of the area, particularly in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lopburi, Saraburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C, with highs of 35 to 37°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.

 

The eastern region will experience thunderstorms and heavy rain in 70% of the area, especially in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 25 to 28°C, with highs of 33 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves are expected to reach heights of approximately 1 metre, with waves over 2 metres in stormy areas.

 

The southern region (East Coast) will see thunderstorms and heavy rain in 60% of the area, particularly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C, with highs of 35 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves are expected to reach heights of approximately 1 metre, with waves over 2 metres in stormy areas.

The southern region (West Coast) will experience thunderstorms and heavy rain in 70% of the area, especially in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, and Trang. Temperatures will range from 25 to 26°C, with highs of 33 to 35°C.

 

Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves are expected to reach heights of approximately 1 metre, with waves over 2 metres in stormy areas.

 

Bangkok and its vicinity will see thunderstorms and heavy rain in 70% of the area, mostly between the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will range from 26 to 29°C, with highs of 35 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds are expected at speeds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.
