UK Government to Classify Misogyny as a Form of Extremism Amid Rising Concerns

The UK government is set to introduce a significant shift in its approach to combating extremism by treating extreme misogyny as a form of extremism. This decision reflects growing concerns over the increasing prevalence of harmful ideologies targeting women. The Home Office announced that this new direction will be a key component of a broader review of the UK’s counter-extremism strategy, which has been ordered by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

In light of escalating threats both online and in public spaces, Cooper has emphasized the urgent need to reassess and strengthen measures to counter extremism in the UK. “There has been a rise in extremism both online and on our streets that frays the very fabric of our communities and our democracy,” Cooper stated. This review will not only address Islamist and far-right extremism, which have long been recognized as significant threats, but will also delve into newer, less traditional forms of extremism, including extreme misogyny.

The rise of extreme misogyny, often propagated through online platforms, has become a growing concern for the UK government. The analysis aims to understand and counteract this trend, viewing it as an ideological movement gaining disturbing traction. By examining the causes and methods of radicalization, particularly among young people, the government hopes to develop more effective strategies to disrupt and divert individuals away from these harmful ideologies.

The review will play a crucial role in shaping a new counter-extremism strategy, which was a promise made in Labour’s manifesto. The strategy aims to "map and monitor extremist trends" in order to effectively combat them. Cooper highlighted the importance of this approach, noting that the strategy will also “identify any gaps in existing policy which need to be addressed to crack down on those pushing harmful and hateful beliefs and violence.” She expressed concern that efforts to tackle extremism have been “badly hollowed out” in recent years, suggesting that more robust and comprehensive measures are now urgently needed.

This initiative comes as part of a broader set of policy reviews that the Labour government has launched since taking office in July. Among these are the Strategic Defence Review, a spending review, and a review of the National Curriculum. The government’s critics may argue that these reviews are a way to delay actual action, but Labour has defended the need for them, pointing out that the last Counter-Extremism Strategy was introduced in 2015. Since then, the landscape of extremism has evolved, with new and emerging threats requiring careful assessment and a targeted response.

The decision to classify extreme misogyny as a form of extremism is not entirely new. There has been growing concern in recent years about “Incel culture,” a disturbing online movement composed primarily of young men who describe themselves as “involuntarily celibate.” Members of this group often direct their anger and frustration at women and “alpha males,” whom they blame for their own difficulties in forming relationships. This toxic ideology has already had tragic consequences.

One of the most shocking incidents linked to Incel ideology occurred in 2021 in Plymouth, where 22-year-old Jake Davison carried out a mass shooting, killing five people before taking his own life. The attack sent shockwaves through the UK, prompting calls for a more aggressive stance against misogynistic extremism. Despite the severity of the incident, no significant policy changes were made at the time.

The recent rise of social media influencers, such as Andrew Tate, who openly espouses misogynistic views, may have further motivated the government to revisit the issue. Tate’s influence over a large online following, particularly among young men, has raised alarms about the normalization of extreme misogynistic views and the potential for such beliefs to incite violence.

As the review progresses, the UK government aims to ensure that its counter-extremism strategy is comprehensive and responsive to the evolving nature of extremist threats. The decision to include extreme misogyny in the scope of this strategy reflects a broader understanding of extremism that goes beyond traditional categories. The review is expected to be completed by October, and its findings will inform the new counter-extremism strategy that Labour has pledged to implement.

This move to address extreme misogyny as a form of extremism marks a significant step forward in the UK’s efforts to combat all forms of hatred and violence. It underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the fabric of society from the corrosive effects of extremist ideologies, whether they are rooted in religious fanaticism, far-right nationalism, or entrenched misogyny.

It's very dangerous to start classifying things like misogyny as extremism.

It devalues the meaning, and raises the risk real extremism being taken too lightly.

Also, if people do not like women, or men, or anything else for that matter that is their right. What next? You're an extremist if you don't like cats? People can like or dislike whatever they want. It's not up to the government to mandate what members of the public likes or dislikes.

Also interesting that misogyny is extremism but not misandry. Yvette Cooper showing her "unconscious bias" maybe?

This Labour government is going from bad to worse. Like a child that has never had a toy and then gets the keys to "Toys R Us" and gets over excited and runs amok.

Not something I feel threatens me or restricts any views I might wish to express one bit.

Others might feel differently.

The Labour government has turned the UK into a laughing stock around the world in just 6 weeks.   It is no longer a serious country.

Labour must be the first British government to get hated from week 1, without a honeymoon period.

Having been in the UK recently, I cannot remember a time when it was as divisive. Nasty inflammatory spiel, from the Left typically, with anyone not having that mindset being labelled hard right and/or racist, and the law/government going along with it. They are going down the wrong road, not allowing opinion, people are getting wound up and it is showing on the streets. It is already heavily feminist (news, ads, BBC Olympics presenting team etc) and this new classification is skewing it further.

Everyone needs protecting and there are a-holes out there that treat women like S, but in general they are brazen and get away with murder compared with Asia... small example: bloke delivering building materials to hotel site, woman driver struggles to get past, spewing all sorts of invective at him. He retorts with I'm just doing my job, please go away, to which she goes straight to management and wants to call the cops. Not the best example, but this new thing will have women threatening guys for being misogynistic for any kind of tiny disagreement.

Tories were useless (aLbeit it is impossible to put right what Blair did),  but Labour are dividing up the country and creating angst.

So Labor have been in power for just over a month and the UK is in a mess, divided, riots/protests, two tier policing etc, now this re classification of misogyny as extremism/terrorism. The question is what is next? Are the UK Government suicidal? Do they have a long term plan based on North Korea?:whistling:

The biggest misogynists in the UK belong to the Muslim sect, where women are second class, honour killings still take place.

You enter a Muslim house, the women are in the kitchen, the men in the living room, FGM still practised, as are arranged marriages, Many women, especially those brought over from Pakistan, not allowed in the workplace.

But, I bet the hard core lefties, trade unionists, woke members and the current, dysfunctional Labour government will have nothing to say about that.

LOL

Why have they got the George Cross emblazoned up there? Are they not embarrassed by it? Surprised it hasn’t been replaced with lots of colours because certain football hooligans associate with it so it must be evil, right!

Early days but never been so disenchanted by a UK gov. Thailand makes us look like a joke. If I were a jock I’d certainly be voting independence from those muppets.

We haven't even got to the stage where their anti-growth policies kick in yet, and energy prices are due to rise by 9% in October as well as inevitable yet to be announced tax rises, all of which is going to make people poorer and more discontented.  Another 3 stabbings yesterday by an as yet "unnamed man" and the illegal immigrants coming on boats is 5500, yet they have time to worry about the likes of Joey Barton observing that women's football is a lower quality than mens football.

Today is the current high point for the Labour government and it is going to continue to spiral downwards.   They are clowns, but not the entertaining kind.

they just made it illegal to call a woman c*nt ... basic biology :giggle:

Your apathy is noted….

The real point here is the mind-set of some that the laws of a particular country can extend to and supersede the laws of other sovereign nations.

A very slippery slope indeed…

I personally find it embarrassing that my own country has publicly stated such ridiculous overreach.  It's a testament to their stupidity that they think they can control and restrict speech not just in the UK but also in America, where freedom of speech is written into the actual constitution.   There is no extradition law that can be used to extradite someone who has committed wrong think to the UK when wrong think is not a crime in the US.

People around the world are laughing at the UK and the people that represent the UK.   Putin with a bit of opportunistic trolling has even offered to provide sanctuary for people suffering under western leftist authoritarian ideology.

Indeed.

Lots of people laughing at the UK right now.

Labour really is embarrassing the nation on a global scale. No matter what you may think of Rogan (I am sure that will be the line of attack to my post), he has massive reach and his scathing comments on the UK are not only valid, but seen around the world.

Labour took a month to be more disliked than the Tories were in 14 years. Worse than even I could have imagined.

I hope the American voters are taking note. You could be next under Harris.

I would agree.

But that does not mean that disliking women is a form of extremism. Only a fool like Cooper could make such a ridiculous statement.

I'm sure this won't actually extend as far as misogyny within Islam.
