Teaching English resources on web?

Featured Replies

Mrs teaches Thai but got a few offers to teach English, 9- 30 year olds. Whats a good resource on the internet? as she has no English text books.

Assuming she works at a school, can't she get books or recommendations from English teachers at the school?

Private not school

The internet has lots of worksheets and exams but course books are difficult to find (copyrights). I know one site that has a selection of English course books which you can download but the wide range of age and probably levels will make it difficult to find some appropriate ones. Send me a message if you are interested.

google "ESL lesson plans for kids" or "ESL games for kids"

british council might have some good stuff

also, consider investing a bit of money in some good textbooks because this will save you a lot time in lesson prep and the classes will be better. don't be too stingy.

I have taught English on line for many years and now Am a keen advocate of Off2Class which not only has lesson content from A1 to  C1 grades but also provides homework and most importantly a proficiency test thast allows you to establish the level at which to start the student

If you go to vk.com - it’s a Russian Facebook, you can find lots of resources, like pirated / scanned text books along with teachers books and audio. If you search “esl” there will be groups with material - piracy is rife on the site as there is no enforcement in Russia.

It’s all well and good suggesting sites that have worksheets, etc. but they often lack content and pitched a little low. If it’s young adults I liked BBC / Pearson speakout - i like a bit of continuity that a structured textbook brings - a well planned course builds upon acquired knowledge. I have cringed at many textbooks given to me in Thailand but I think the book I mentioned, which is available on vk, is pretty relevant and not too difficult for the students.

If you want other resources I just googled “bbc esl” and there were lots of online resources.

piracy

There you go, get her to teach Arrrrrrr, I'm a pirate, and not Allllllllll, I'm a pilate. Teachers recommending copyright theft, why am I not surprised.

So why does her husband have to ask piracy theft advocates online? 🤔

islcollective.com

Lots of community created worksheets and PowerPoints. Always best to check them first though because a few mistakes slip through.

You have to be more definitive. There are a number of reputable companies on line that you need to pay to join, for example readinga-z.com. Those aside the net is not a good place to go for reasources, only that unworthy of being published is uploaded there.

Your friend out to know by now its far better to make your own resources than rely on those somewhat shoddy.

I know, I know you asked for internet resources but even still.... There is o book by Raymond Murphy  called "English Grammar in Use" from Cambridge press that covers language essentials with a presentation on the left page and exercises for the language point on the right page.

So volume of lesson is not overwhelming.

Very little grammar terminology just teaching by practical examples of use.

Ready to use lessons. Do you have a printer?

This book would be an investment of course but your wife will be charging her students right?

Of course there will be criticisms, there alway are, but this book is better than a CELTA to get you teaching LOL.

Betty Azar has written several good English grammar textbooks that come with clear explanations and lots of exercises for the students.  I particularly like the fact that she explains the differences between British and American grammar usage.  Most authors simply pretend that the other version of English doesn't exist, but students often see the difference and are puzzled.
