I can do it on the phone easy enough via the VPN app, but I don't know how to direct the smart tv to use the same VPN?

currently using 3BB and no android TV box, I usually cast to TV using VPN

You might need a tech guy to set up the VPN use in the router.  App selections that can be downloaded to an Android TV is very limited, by the manufacturer.

The problem is that your phone (with VPN running) is on a different network than your TV.

The phone is on a network outside of your home LAN, while your TV is on your home LAN.

In this situation, you cannot cast from your phone running a VPN to your TV.

So you have a few options...

run a VPN on the TV

attach a streaming device to your TV (HDMI) and run the VPN, and channel sources, on that device (Chromecast for example)

create a VPN LAN on your router, and attach both your phone and TV to that VPN LAN.

It would help if you could share exactly what you have...network and devices, and what it is you're trying to do (specific example).

you can do as others say and set the router to use the VPN
but this will mean all traffic goes through the VPN at all times
so no split tunneling
you may also need DD-WRT router or Asus router to do this
i assume your smart TV is not an android TV?
i use windscribe VPN and they have an app for android TVs (and firestick)
seems if TV has no android you would likely need another device
so casting to TV from Phone as you already do
may be your best option

if you don't mind spending OR if you have a spare router
setup the VPN on the spare router and connect the TV to that router
(and obviously connect that router to your main router)
this setup is fine if you do not mind the VPN always on for the TV
if TV has wifi and can connect to main router via wifi
then you could be able to switch between the VPN router, and nonVPN wifi

Can you describe how you accomplish this?

I don't think you are 'casting'. Maybe 'mirroring' using Miracast? Essentially a 'wireless' HDMI cable.

But I would like to know how you are doing this.

With a VPN running on your phone you have an IP address within the VPN provider's network, while your TV is on your home LAN. AFAIK, there is no way to 'cast' unless both devices are on your home LAN (ethernet and WiFi on the same network).

I'm using 3BB fiber, Samsung TV is connected via ethernet, phone is connected via wifi and VPN, this then allows me to cast to TV. If i could get the ethernet connection to use the same VPN i wouldn't need to cast

No thanks, it's easy enough using the phone to cast but I'd prefer to use the youtube app on the TV

Yeah, you're 'mirroring' and not 'casting'.

A Samsung TV (Tizen OS) CANNOT run a VPN client.

Why do you need to run a VPN to view Youtube?

They call it "casting" see phone image, maybe let Xiaomi know.

I'm watching LIV golf on YouTube and you need a VPN to watch, on TV it's full screen, on phone i have to fit to screen etc to make it the size i want, would just be a little better to use app on TV and no I don't want to use an Android TV box, a backward step

Have you downloaded the specific VPN app for the TV onto the TV?

Or as others have said, you can install on your router.

the apps available on the Samsung TV are mostly garbage and I'm not interested in sideloading or anything like that.

I would have expected to be able to add VPN to the 3BB setting webpages but didn't see anything

Ideally I'd like to connect the ethernet only to route via VPN, but those instructions seem to require a computer

For that, I think you need a VPN compatible router, which can be expensive.

How to set up a VPN on your router Here

I was talking about an app from your VPN provider, specifically for your tv.

e.g. Have a look here for more info in setting up a VPN on TV:

Using an Android box would be a forward step for you. Instead of moving forward to success, you've had to abandon your project.

Your current solution is just makeshift, but you claim it is superior. That's fine, you have to live with yourself.

But if you want to get yourself ready for next years events, look to Smart DNS. Dependent on your VPN provider, they may already supply you with such a service. Express VPN offer MediaStreamer Smart DNS. So if you have Express VPN, your problem is solved. NordVPN also offer it under their SmartPlay feature.

Aaahh...I can see that you are using a VPN that doesn't offer Smart DNS as part of their service.
