Gobbler Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 I looked forward to reading the entire newspaper. I always gave away the sports section, and I would read every article. In 2001, the articles were written at an 8th-grade level. Now, most newspapers are written at a 1st—or 2nd-grade level. To someone like me who has an education, newspapers are a joke now. I can't read either significant newspaper, so I don't bother. Grammar is almost nonexistent. It was a pleasure to read them in 2001. The reporting was superb. What a shame.
KannikaP Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Just look at some of the posts here on AN. Spelling, grammar and absolute rubbish content from some members. 2
NativeBob Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Massive degradation is happening right in front of our eyes. Massive. 2
Gobbler Posted September 26, 2024 Author Posted September 26, 2024 I expect more from journalism. We all know journalists worldwide have no integrity, but now they lack the skills to showcase their lack of integrity. 2
Gobbler Posted September 26, 2024 Author Posted September 26, 2024 I'll ask the obvious question: Which newspapers still write in proper English? That is worldwide, I am not just asking about Thailand. 1

The best publication for the use of near correct English is, in my view, The Economist, closely followed by The Spectator. 1

It doesnt offend me as much as some papers - The Mail being the main one. 1

Nice to hear you found another thing to complain about. Why don´t you write a better newspaper then? I am sure you could make a lot of money.
Fat is a type of crazy Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Gobbler I think most big newspapers have lots of good reporters and writers with integrity. I get really sick of the Main stream media bad narrative. They are mainstream because they gained credibility and readership. In the pre internet age the papers of course had all the real estate and car ads and made so much money they could afford huge investigations and take time with stories. My local newspaper the Age in Australia used to be huge on a Saturday. But that revenue often later went to cheaper specialist sites and social media. Then of course general advertising in the news and sports section suffered as readership fell and many get all there news from social media and the latter often don't pay the creators being the newspapers what they should. People don't want to pay to access the news too. They have to do much more which much less and quality of output suffers I suppose except for the really big papers.

Gobbler Posted September 26, 2024 Author Posted September 26, 2024 Quote According to the officers, Ms. Wiphanee (last name was withheld) was arrested after she went on a rampage, damaging eight vehicles and threatening three foreign tourists with a 9mm automatic firearm while they were sitting in a tuk-tuk. The suspect, who had no bullets in her gun, caused widespread panic, fortunately, no one was injured. This is an excerpt from the Pattaya Mail. A 9mm gun is not an automatic firearm; it is semi-automatic and the difference between the two is huge. 1 1
