Close Call: Footage Captures Car Passing Over Collapsing Road in Phayao

A major road collapse occurred in Phayao Province on September 29, prompting urgent warnings for motorists traveling through the affected area. Residents described hearing a loud noise just before the ground gave way, and they rushed to stop vehicles from crossing the hazardous section.

 

Witnesses report that traffic had been flowing steadily in the hours before the incident, with cars regularly using the route. It is believed that the cracks, which had already begun to appear between 08:00 and 09:00, worsened as vehicles continued to drive over the road, eventually causing the surface to give way.

 

 

Footage from a car’s dashcam has surfaced, showing a vehicle narrowly escaping the road collapse. The video shows the car driving over the road moments before it collapsed. Long cracks had already formed along the surface before the road gave way.

 

The collapse happened on Phahon Yothin Road, the Nakhon Sawan-Chiang Rai route, just six kilometers from Phayao University.. The area borders Ban Chon Daen in Ngao District, Lampang, and Ban Mae Ka Tha Kham, Mae Ka Subdistrict. The road sank to a depth of 10 metres and stretched about 100 meteres long.

 

Residents immediately notified local authorities, including the Phayao Department of Highways, the Luecha Foundation, and Mae Ka Highway Police. The authorities quickly closed the collapsed section of the road and diverted traffic to a single opposite lane. Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution while traveling through this area, as repairs are expected to take several days. 
 

The collapse is believed to have been caused by heavy rains over the past two months, which saturated the soil and caused the road to give way.

What foundations?

From what I have seen, they clear the land, flatten it with a road roller and then lay the concrete.

Road collapses happen all of the time here, the land is mostly sandy soil.
