This is a joke, right? And Qatar in second place? What is the world coming to....

And Russia in the Security Council vetoing all the resolutions against it!

All these are jokes. But many people are enjoying life therein.

This is one reason why most people see the UN as a joke, - It is, no doubt.

allowing a nation that violates so many human rights to actually take a seat... - do you really mean just ONLY ONE of those nations? Are ALL others therein perfect?

Um, this is about Thailand, NOT other countries... just keep it relevant.

At any rate. At least now Thailand is in a position to compare themselves with other countries firsthand and change their status also.

These are the 47 members of the UNHRC for 2025:

Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Benin, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, Cameroon, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Côte D’ivoire, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Finland, France, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, Paraguay, Qatar, Romania, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, United States Of America, Viet Nam

Aside from the Western European countries, the U.K.,  U.S.,  Japan and possibly Costa Rica,  Thailand has an equally good or better record on human rights than other UNHTC members in Asia, Africa, Latin America and East Europe.   Thailand is by no means out of place on the UNHRC.

Well... they do say the best way to hide your problems is directly under the nose of those who are watching.

I realized that a long time ago. All these 'high profile' humanitarian organizations are the same. They are rich. They collect money for the poor and war effected and enjoy the bigger share on themselves. I know the luxurious life they lead, as I had the opportunity to work for one for awhile!

Luxurious ? not.

According to the Noblemaire principle, our benefits are aligned with the best civil service among member states, namely the US. It is true that there is a good proportion of UN and US civil service retiree holding LTR/WP visas.

But I am just as puzzled as everyone else by this TT (Thai Thriumph).

And don't be jealous..

Funny how that works ?

What I have read about UN justification of having abuser members on the UNHRC was to shame them in a public world forum by lesser/non-abuser members, meaning the number of members not deemed abusers is irrelevant. For example, USA defenders of freedom isn't currently on the UNHRC by choice - it matters not.

Somehow in a fantasy (yes funny) way, such public shaming would to some degree mitigate abuses by highly abusive members from lesser abusive members. Utterly ineffective.

And you can't count on the UN Security Council that includes abusive members to take any punitive sanctions such as economic bans.

Note: Also overlooked (perhaps) is that prior to 2014 the THRC was an independent agency whose reports were NOT subject to review and alteration by the Thai government. But subsequently, a new Constitution required any THRC reports must be submitted to the government as drafts, approved and must NOT include anything that would "damage" Thailand's reputation.

I take it that North Korea didn't apply for a seat.

After seeing the news that Thailand had 'won' a seat on the UN Human Rights committee I was totally shocked when the Nobel Peace Prize was not shared by Netanyahu and Putin.
