Report Thailand Prepares for Floods with New Alert System and Measures
File photo for reference only In response to forecasts of an early monsoon, the Thai government has ramped up its flood preparedness strategy. Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong spearheaded a vital meeting at the Royal Irrigation Department's Smart Water Operation Center to coordinate emergency efforts against the looming threat. With 1,652 locations identified as flood-prone, areas like Chiang Rai and Nong Khai are particularly vulnerable, already experiencing heavy rains. As storms are expected to persist through October, this plan is critical to mitigate the impacts of flash floods and landslides. The government’s multi-agency approach involves the Royal Irrigation Department (RID), Thai Meteorological Department, National Water Resources Office, and several others. They are tasked with integrating weather forecasts into water management strategies, aiming to issue alerts at least 2-3 days in advance. Authorities face the pressing task of inspecting water infrastructure, clearing obstructions, and positioning essential equipment such as pumps and boats for rapid deployment. The Department of Mineral Resources continues to assess risks like landslides to enhance regional readiness. Coordination extends to building levees and engaging with Myanmar on environmental issues like sediment runoff. Local administrations will collaborate with military units to dredge rivers and remove structures hindering water flow. Public awareness is a major focus, with plans to enhance communication through cell broadcast alerts and other channels. The aim is to keep citizens informed and ready, while counteracting misinformation during critical times. Post-flood, rapid assessment and compensation for damage to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure will be essential. Efforts to clean, repair, and restore communities, particularly isolated areas, will be supported by government agencies, NGOs, and private entities. Deputy Prime Minister Prasert highlighted the need for robust action plans, ensuring timely aid to those affected. With the monsoon looming, the nation's preparedness measures are crucial in safeguarding lives and livelihoods across Thailand. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-07-03 -

USA UPenn ban trans athletes after probe involving swimmer Lia Thomas
So, are you saying that in "men's sports," there will be no gender qualifications? If so, then anyone can participate - men, transmen, transwomen, and women. Would there be no gender tests or examinations, then? If so, that's why I suggested they call the two classifications "sports," and only have another, limited type of sports called "women's (only) sports." -
