David Lammy has downplayed his past criticisms of Donald Trump

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has downplayed his past criticisms of Donald Trump, calling them "old news" and emphasizing his ability to find "common ground" with the president-elect. This marks a significant shift from his prior statements, where he described Trump in harsh terms. As a backbench MP in 2018, Lammy referred to Trump as a "tyrant" and a “woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath." Yet, following Trump’s recent election victory, Lammy has publicly acknowledged the president-elect as "someone that we can build a relationship with in our national interest."

In an interview with the BBC’s *Newscast* podcast, Lammy commended Trump’s campaign, stating, “I felt in my bones that there could be a Trump presidency.” When asked about his previous statements, he shrugged them off as a thing of the past, pointing out that one would “struggle to find any politician” who hadn’t made similar remarks about Trump. Lammy argued that there is a difference between what a politician might say as a backbencher and how they act in an official capacity. “I think that what you say as a backbencher and what you do wearing the real duty of public office are two different things,” he explained, adding, “And I am foreign secretary. There are things I know now that I didn’t know back then.”

Lammy also clarified that Trump did not bring up the previous comments when they met in New York in September. "Not even vaguely," Lammy said, before noting, "I know this is a talking point today, but in a world where there’s war in Europe, where there’s a tremendous loss of life in the Middle East, where the US and the UK genuinely have a special relationship, where we got someone who’s about to become again the US president, who has experience of doing the job last time round, we will forge common interests."

Lammy highlighted the importance of open discussions with Trump, especially on issues where they might not see eye to eye. “We will agree and align on much and where we disagree, we’ll have those conversations as well, most often in private,” he added.

The foreign secretary was also asked about Trump’s stance on trade, particularly his campaign pledge to increase tariffs on foreign imports, a move that could impact British exports such as Scotch whisky, pharmaceuticals, and airplane parts. Lammy expressed hope that the UK could avoid these tariffs, stressing the long-term importance of economic cooperation. “We will seek to ensure and to get across to the United States, and I believe that they would understand this, that hurting your closest allies cannot be in your medium or long-term interests,” he said.

Lammy’s comments reflect a shift towards diplomacy, emphasizing the practicalities of holding office and the importance of maintaining a strong UK-US alliance despite past criticisms.

Ha ha , his opinion changes with the direction of the wind ...

He is a politician .

Now , as everybody knows that Trump will be back to what he describes as absolute power , a lot of his critics and enemies tremble of fear ...

Harris did party too much too early , ( democratic convention with Beyonce etc ) , never good ...

Not all people like show business ...

Now we will see what Trump does , and if , what he does , is conform to what he said and says ...

I only hope that Thailand is far away enough ...

Lammy's previous personal attacks on Donald Trump show that Lammy is unsuited for office.  The fact that Starmer failed to recognise this shows a similar failing. The UK being represented on the World Stage by such inadequate characters is more akin to what would be expected in a  banana republic.  Oh, hang on....

Making Lammy Foreign Secretary was one of the most disastrous decisions in British political history. He is an anti-British, anti-American, anti-white, antisemitic racist. He was heavily critical of the then Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, for mentioning the Pakistani ethnicity of 16 men in Huddersfield after they were convicted for the rape and sexual abuse of fifteen young white girls during a seven-year reign of terror.

Lammy is an apologist for Islam, which he does, and has always done, in order to buy the muslim vote; he thinks it more righteous to protect the ethnicity of a Pakistani grooming gang, than to be concerned for the welfare of the white children victims that they raped and abused over a 7 year period.

He is also an expenses cheat who claimed for a second home allowance while living 7 miles from Parliament, at the cost of the taxpayer; he is a moral coward and he distills the very essence of champagne socialism; live the capitalist lifestyle to the full, and then insist that everyone else embraces socialism.

……………… the fact that he is an ugly bloated slug has nothing to do with my criticism of him  ¯\_()_/¯

Lammy made these comments not so long ago. and they are on record. Trying to crawl away from them now is pathetic.

Unlikely Starmer will fire him as he's the only dei hire on the front bench.

Student politician.

I'd have had more respect for him if he stuck to his guns. Instead the coward has backtracked.

Totally inept. Sack him.

Sometimes you have to forsake your morals and opinions to keep yourself in a job.

I would struggle with that personally but he is a politician after all so no great surprise.

Lammy was not nearly as gracious towards Trump during his first presidency.

Well said!!!!+

He made these comments when he was still at the Student Union, right? I mean it must have been.

Looks like Lammy has turned a corner and now sees past transgressions as "old news" and nothing to be concerned about today.  Looking forward to no longer hearing from him about slavery and reparations as this surely meets the definition of "old news".

I hope Trump doesn't forget about it and gives this fat racist slob what he deserves

An appalling appointment- pure tokenism. The guy is a moron and for Starmer to choose him as head of UKs diplomacy shows dreadful judgement.

indeed, he should have doubled down and said, If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

What a slimey hypocrite that piece of <deleted> is.

Hopefully Trump will not accept that Lammy is genuinely sorry. Trump should refuse to deal with him or Starmer personally.

Trump doesn't give a rat's a$$ about the opinions of a jumped-up UK politician.  In fact, Trump would enjoy shaking hands with the guy, since it would be far more humiliating than exchanging private diplomatic "words."
