Towards Greener Pastures: Thailand Advances on Its Smart City Initiative
Yesterday, Thailand solidified its commitment to the sustainable future. Experts gathered at the Thailand Smart City Expo 2025 seminar, deliberating on a more green, open, smart and life-enhancing cities blueprint for the country. Spearheaded by the Nation Group’s PostToday and Springnews, the event took place on 12 November, attracting both public officials and private sector leaders. A highlight of the meeting was the emphasis on the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) presented by Eastern Economic Corridor Office Secretary Chula Sukmanop. The vision for EEC includes the creation of the EEC Capital City, an urban hub drawing on artificial intelligence and digital platforms to foster a greener environment. Investment attraction was centred on bio-circular-green industries, underlying the commitment to sustainable practices. Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, echoed similar sentiments as he underscored the capital’s adoption of smart technology for better governance and public demand handling. The Governor referred to the AI-driven Traffy Fondue app, a ground-breaking initiative improving the transparency and efficiency of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Sittipunt noted, “A real smart city means the adoption of appropriate technology which allows people to solve issues equally.” Ushering more transparency and public engagement, open data initiatives are enabling residents to track government budgets and policies online. Further supplementing this effort, Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong revealed the City Data Platform project. The initiative aims to gather essential data from 175 cities to help address urban challenges, from city planning to energy and transport issues. The Thai government is also seeking collaboration with the Board of Investment to draw big tech companies to the country, boosting Thailand’s stature as a regional hub for smart, sustainable city innovation. This commitment to strengthening smart city infrastructure aims to improve data security, lift living standards, and enhance Thailand's global competitiveness in the long run. The hospital arrangement is under suspicion as a possible ruse to avoid prison time, raising questions of privilege and propriety. Despite setting up an ad hoc committee to gather evidence, the NACC has hit a roadblock. Information from Police Hospital, where Thaksin stayed supposedly as a critically ill patient, is scant. Beyond receiving two million baht in hospital bills, the committee is waiting for detailed disclosures on Thaksin’s health status and medical treatments. This delay occurs against the backdrop of public demand for transparency. The Network of Students and People for Thailand Reform questioned the apparent leniency afforded to Thaksin, especially following an eight-year sentence for abuse of power, later reduced to one year by royal pardon. His stay at Police Hospital, thought to be orchestrated to evade prison cells, remains clouded in secrecy under the guise of privacy concerns. Meanwhile, Thaksin, the influential figure within the Pheu Thai Party, has returned from 17 years abroad and recently visited Udorn Thani. There, he rallied support for Pheu Thai candidate Saravut Petpanomporn in the upcoming provincial race against rival Khanisorn Khurirang, scheduled for 24th November. Udorn Thani, a stronghold of the Red Shirt movement and pro-Pheu Thai sympathisers, largely backed Thaksin’s candidates in the previous general elections. This political mobilisation highlights Thaksin's enduring influence in Thai politics, as the nation awaits the graft agency's decision.
