The OP is not referring to E-gates, they have been in use in departures for a while and working quite well so far. I used one to leave in Sept.

You have to bear in mind you arrive as a foreigner which requires a visa status check. The first arrival E-gates for foreigners are supposed to come with ETA.

I left through BKK on international flight 2 weeks ago. It works great, Scan passport step through to next gate, scan fingerprints and gate opens. Very impressive.

The self check in systems are great if they work and the airport is designed for the process.

If you just stick kiosks into the check in area and leave the old counter structures it's a recipe for chaos if KLIA2 in KL is any example

It may come as a surprise to you but immigration management and airport management have completely different objectives.

Not surprised at all. My comment was in response to the puzzlement  as to why there were 2 separate scans.  

Do try to read the subject matter first before trying to offer a snappy retort.

Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) yesterday announced that the state-owned enterprise will implement facial recognition services at six major airports for international flights starting December 1.

 

The biometrics-based system will be deployed at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket, and Suvarnabhumi airports. AOT anticipates the new technology will significantly streamline the passenger experience, reducing checkpoint processing time for registered travellers from three minutes to just one minute.

 

Travellers can register for the automated biometric identification system through two primary methods: by working with airline staff at traditional check-in counters or by using common-use self-service (CUSS) check-in counters.

 

During registration, passengers will have their faces scanned into the system.

 

 

 

After completing registration, travellers will be able to use Common Use Bag Drop (CUBD) machines to check their luggage without needing to present their boarding passes or passports.

 

In compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, AOT has committed to erasing all stored biometric data within 48 hours of registration.

 

The facial recognition service was initially introduced for domestic flights on November 1 and is now expanding to include international travel, reported Bangkok Post.

     The self-service was a breeze when I went thru it on Tuesday for my trip to Europe.  Put the passport face down on the photo page, wait about 3 or 4 seconds, your photo comes up on the screen, the doors open, and off you go.  This was after the carry-on luggage scanning was also a breeze--no lines and that went fast, too.

That sounds like the immigration auto gates?  This article is about another system for bag drop, boarding etc where normally you would show your ID and boarding pass but now will be done using facial recognition.  Despite their claims it does not appear to be getting used yet for all departures (if any).
