Until his deportation, the British man will be held at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC).

That'll teach him and his memory. Happy days at IDC.

It reduces by a certain amount for every day that one spends in the immigration monkey-house.

Really?

Technically you still have to pay for what you overstayed "outside of prison" and nothing during detention.

Interesting if they apply some "creative approach"

btw, the food in IDC is "uneatable" - either you order with quadruple price or enjoy long fasting. Even in BKK, I guess Phuket is even worse.

Poor sod, he probably said something very "british" like "PHOOK OFF, YOU BASTARD!"

So, they're never going to deport you or free you from prison until the fine has been paid in full?

Why do these coppers always stand up and make the accused sit down?

Is it a power trip thing or what??

What makes you think that to be the case...urban myth?   Producing an airline ticket is also needed in order to be released (to be deported) and time inside sure doesn't pay for that!

It’s remarkable, isn’t it? Reading some of the comments and opinions shared here, one’s immediate impression often veers towards unrefined and uneducated rabble.....

....And, by "uneducated," I don’t mean lacking formal education, it’s far more telling than that. It’s the kind of ignorance born from traversing through life without ever realising that realities and experiences far beyond their own not only exist but transcend their narrow purview.

Such individuals habitually expose their own stunted growth through the sheer recklessness of their unhinged judgements, a reflection of their unrefined perspectives and intellectual stagnation.

Did you run that through Ai........

Why not check for yourself...     https://quillbot.com/ai-content-detector

It seems some people project from their own standards when someone else is able to string a sentence together !!!...

Unnecessarily snarky I feel considering my use of the "unsure" emoji

He was on his way out. Just impose the maximum fine and ban and let him leave on his plane. No reason for the theatre.

Can Immigration impose the 5 or 10 year ban without actually arresting the offender? I would think that many over-stayers would happily pay 20K baht if that was the only consequence. An automatic ban if over a certain number of days and the possibility of a stay at the IDC would be more of a deterrent than the slap on the wrist of a simple fine and letting the offender board their flight.

But it's free theatre, support the arts!

A British man was arrested on 27 November at Phuket International Airport for violating Section 81 of the Immigration Act (overstay). He had stayed in the country 130 days longer than permitted by the stamp in his passport.

... and you can show valid airplane ticket away from Thailand.

Here comes fun: they might demand the destination must be your home country, but AFAIK it is wrong requirement. Any country, even flight to Penang, MY. But for some reason [I wonder] everybody insist on homeland.

I also heard that it must be your home country.

As I mentioned previously, I also heard that the 20,000 Baht maximum fine reduces by 200 Baht for every day spent in immigration prison, so,  100 days in the monkey house before deportation.

I did see years ago that if the Thais deport you it must be to your home country. But of your own accord, anywhere. But maybe they're not consistent with it?

Good point @Andrew65

as you might have noticed the Imm. police generally equipped of/with semi-literals and often officers make their own rules based on their own "common sense".

The agent (according to his thick accent - polish) can "take care of easy departure" for "only" 15K. In Bangkok. Don't know about Surat Thani and obviously Chonburi.

Some airlines refuse to take deportees if not to persons passport country as the destination country might refuse the deported person entry , then the airline is lumbered with costs and problems of where to take the passenger.

Probably. The staff is also very strange. They make their own rules. Once [20+ years ago] I was denied to flight to SG based on "no visa" although I had round trip ticket and didn't need SG visa.

Just some dumb girl of SG airlines thought so

Many funny things are happening in airports of Thailand.

After the arrest, he was taken to Sakhu Police Station to face formal charges under Section 81. While this section allows for imprisonment of up to two years, courts usually impose a fine of 500 baht per day (capped at 20,000 baht) and deportation. Until his deportation, the British man will be held at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC).

Yes you can't cuddle wit these people.
