Over a month ago 2 dogs arrived at our land. They seemed friendly and I fed them once and then started everyday. My child liked them a lot. After a week or so we asked the village head to try to find the original owners- to no avail. We started to let them sleep inside our yard and one of them turned out to be a good guard dog. Also they caught and killed a snake last week. 

 

The negative thing is that one of them is younger and a little bugger bc he chews everything in site. So many ripped up things eg: Shoes, tools, 2 chairs, my work shirt. The young one even started drinking out of my tea cup and the next day jumped up on my stone table and took the cup to the yard and broke it. Anything he can find eg pipes all ends up in the back yard. 

 

I started putting everything in plastic boxes but it was always something. Im not there all the time and come back and find something ripped up in the yard. 

 

Yesterday I was really pissed as they chewed up and pulled out 5 trees that I had planted. I hit the roof and put them outside the gate. They sleep in another area of the land where I had new bags of soil. This morning I saw they had ripped open the plastic bags and soil everywhere.

 

Now I dont know what to do. I think if I was to sterilize the older one he would be ok. He is the guard dog as well. The younger one is useless and immature. I dont know if I can ever trust him inside our yard again

 

2 weeks ago when walking them a guy stops on his motorcycle and the dogs were so happy to see him. He was the previous owner I think. My thai skills are a bit average but I think I kind of know the direction where he lives in our semi rural area. He didnt want to take the dogs back. I suspect he'd had enough of them as well for reasons stated above. 

 

Its a bit heartless to take one of them back up to the area where the original owner is and keep the older one. They should not be separated. They chase each other around and enjoy each others company so much. 

 

I dont know what to do about the actually. The younger one is a real little <deleted>. My child is attached to the older one now. I will be the bad dad if I get rid of them. 

Don't let them in your gate, problem solved. I see many soi dogs who wait outside gates for food.

 

If you want to continue feeding them, do it outside the gate or elsewhere, that's what dog feeders do, well away from their home

I bought a collar for one once and it took it to the local gold buyer and sold it !

I think it was an extremely foolish idea in the first place. So that's the reason.

Stop feeding them and keep them away. Being heartless is a good method of sanity retention.

Are you going to pay for compensation if it bites a kid ???

 

I know that's somewhat of a divisive question, however, you have taken the dogs under your control and that is something I think any owner should be concerned with.

 

 

Control and training. Build yourself a lockable pen. If you are going to do it, do it right and go all the way, else, put them outside, keep them off your area.

I bought a dog from a blacksmith and when I got it home it made a bolt for the door.

Dead wrong. I'm late 40s been married 17 years. No need to mention then you go on to memention. You can't make this stuff up. Gold jerry gold.

absolutely agree 100% ....   I like clean good dogs,   I hate diseased soi dogs,  they are pests.

It is quite common for younger dogs to chew on all kind of things. It is the responsibility of the owner to carefully teach the dogs how to behave. My previous wife bought a young dog and we had the same problem for quite a while. You have to give the dogs some chewing toys and wooden bones to chew on. This is important. I did exactly that and the chewing on other items stopped

after a while.

Dogs like to chew and you must give them something to chew on. In our case the wooden bone (ordered from Lazada) did the trick. At the same time you have to try to teach the dog not to chew other items. There are lots of videos on Youtube how to teach the behavior of dogs. It takes some time and patience however. Or dog is sterilized.

Hang in there, you'll develop a bond with them & they will become part of the family.  Our dog, when it was young did the same, tore things up, and dug massive holes overnight, but with some discipline, it matured and stopped.

Chewing is for the young dog trying to strengthen its teeth, it can act like this out of boredom as well. A few toys might help and playing with it and giving it a bit of attention.

 

Nothing wrong in my book in getting them sterilised, too many soi dogs anyway.

 

We get frustrated as well, for a different reason.

 

We keep our five dogs (we have a big piece of land) and we wash them, shampoo them, treat them with flea powders and collars, we make sure they are inoculated etc.

 

The problem is that every other villager doesn't, or none that I have seen.

 

They want them as puppies to parade around, but as soon as the cuteness is gone, so is the care.

 

With our dogs coming into contact with the village dogs, it's a constant battle to keep them clean.

 

We also have a neighbour on the opposite side of the road who is an alcoholic and never feeds his dog. His son used to look after the dog, but he now works away a lot in construction.

 

 The dog constantly gets through when our gate is opened to steal any food from the bowls lying around. Because he's very hungry, he shows little fear.

 

A waste of time talking to the drunkard.

Yes they will grow out of it. By the age of 2 there should be a significant decrease in their destructive behaviour. Give the dogs something to chew on that you don't need.

Train them or take them to someone that will train them for you  , don’t abandon them . You have them now do the right thing , I’m not a dog lover .

I hate the way Thais fawn over puppies then dump them or lock them outside their gate when they grow up. It's a very superficial liking for a particular kind of animal though shows no evidence of any true devotion or recognition of the dog having special traits beyond that of livestock. I get sick of all the blame and hate heaped on street dogs which are simple the direct result of the immature and heartless approach by Thais to raising then not raising domestic animals. Don't be like the Thais. Set an example. Teach the dogs and train them.

Except with bargirls you have to do the hard work first.

It's been my experience that dogs that show up unexpectedly out of the blue seemingly looking for a new home are often not runaways but are unwanted pets or remnants of litters which have been surreptitiously dumped far enough away from the owner's home so that they can't find their way back home.

 

Obviously, there could be many reasons why a pet could be unwanted, but the possibility of behavioral and health problems (biting, chewing, incessant barking, incontinence, aggressiveness) have led me to be cautious about adopting "stray" animals.

Couldn't agree more. If residents farangs are not going to display some empathy for the dogs, who will? They don't have to necessarily take them in as house pets, but they can at least view them through more sympathetic and understanding eyes. To blame someone less callous than them for trying to help the dogs and temporarily 'failing' is disgusting. Certainly not someone I'd be seeking out to share a beer in the evening.
