What to do when I need to stay in Thailand longer than the approved visa?

Hi,

 

I entered Thailand with a 90 day visa almost 3 months ago. Originally I planned to leave before 90 days are over. Unfortunately I have a medical issue and need to stay about a month after 90 days. My case is a bit different because I entered Thailand with a foreign passport. However I also have a Thai passport (but didn't use it for entering). What's the proper and simplest way to do this? I'm hesitating between these two:

(1) Leave Thailand before 90 days is over as originally planned to the close neighboring countries (Malaysia, Lao, etc) for a few hours and re-enter Thailand using Thai passport.

(2) Try to apply for a 30 day visa while staying in Thailand and ask for the start date as the end date of the 90 day visa.

I think #2 is less hassle but not sure if it's doable. Please share  your thoughts. Thank you.

You just go to emigration and tell them your case, they stamp you out, and thats it.

 

The only reason you would use your other nationality I guess was travel insurance you living abroad and travelling to Thailand. ?

OP, just do a border bounce either by land or air.

Reenter Thailand visa exempt. 

That will give you 60 day stamp that can be extended by 30 days.

Assume you are not married to a Thai.

If you have a valid Thai National ID card and a valid Thai passport, you are a Thai citizen.

That is immaterial that you entered on a foreign passport.

 

The rule was recently changed by the Ministry of interior, that Thai citizens entering Thailand on a foreign passport will not be charged overstay fee /deportation or any punishment.

 

You don't have to exit Thailand or apply visa of any kind bcoz you're Thai.

 

Simply show your Thai passport, foreign passport and Thai National ID card upon exit

Was not aware of that change in policy.

Previously enter on foreign passport the requirements for stay was determined by that pp.

Good news for folk with Thai passport.

Thank you. I have a specific reason to use other country passport.

Thank you! I don't know that this rule exists. Would they stamp on my foreign passport that I leave Thailand? That's what I need.

Did you obtain Thai citizenship or born a Thai national.

The attached thread I posted earlier seems to suggest a difference.

I obtained Thai citizenship by birth. I've read the link that you posted (thanks again). It was still a bit unclear on what they would do on the foreign passport. I prefer to have stamps on my foreign passport to show where I have been. People said it's better that way in the eye of the immigration office (trackability). It would be nice if we have someone who have gone through this process at the immigration to share with us how they do things.

I can't give sound advice on this.

Suggest that you exit Thailand using same foreign passport you entered with.

Obviously have your Thai passport with you and explain you a Thai citizen.

Change of passport nationality must be done via air, not possible via land border.

Yes either by land border or via air suggest the OP uses same pp he entered Thailand.

It's not possible to swap passport nationality at land borders.

He entered on foreign passport.

When he exits Thailand he should produce his foreign passport.

You can easily get an extension into your foreign passport when you present your Thai passport to the immigration officer. Done that in the past for my daughter in Pattaya - walk in the park - free of charge 😉
