There is a HUGE amount of false and misleading information on this topic on this forum (the renewal of a Canadian passport in Thailand). These are the facts:

1. You may renew your passport at the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok.

2. You may book appointment to go in person or you may mail in your application.

3. You may choose to pick up the new passport in person or have it mailed to you.

4. The turn-around time is very reasonable.

Source? Personal experience.

100% correct.I got mine mailed to me in 7 days last time.1,2,3,4.

Yesterday I spoke with my friend who works for Canada Post.  He said they are not going back to work any time soon.

If I were you I would fly back to Canada and get a new passport in person.

Unless the Canadian passport office will send back your new passport by Fedex.

Good luck!

Canada post does this almost every year so that their staff get a long holiday at XMAS.

The part that P!sses me off is that a lot of young people used to depend on part-time work sorting parcels and getting mail through for Christmas. As I worked for a subcontractor delivering, I also got extra hours and wages. It was a good thing.  Then the Union decided to be anal and screwed up a good thing.

We had to empty the boxes every day and got harrassed by the idiots on the street  Heaven help us if we actually got out of our vans to throw the mail bags into the loading dock.

I grew up in a Pro-union house, but I can tell you that the Posties turned me off unions.

Just a follow up got informed that my passport is ready to pick up Monday.  They are also going to help me with my letter for immigration hopefully

Question

Is there any form I need to do beforehand for them to move everything to my new passport?  I like tohve all the paperwork done before I go there seems to make it easier at PT immigration.

Thanks

This is form CW and some other offices use

https://aseannow.com/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=995063&key=4ad28e64c063398b61d0a726240743c6

Notice list of docs bottom of form.

If using money in bank method for extension retirement be aware that some offices want bank book and update.

This is new rabbit trap.

Don't worry about anything from embassy some embassies have stopped providing letter to immigration to allow transfer..

Great you got the new boy.

Don't forget to update your bank.

They will do that for you next time you deal with teller.

Personally I would not take the chance.

At very least would be talking to folk at your embassy.

Check info on emergency pp.

Reading Toronto times seems postal services have been down since Nov 15. So how quickly they return is guess work.

Easy for Oz folk (only 9 hr direct flight) to suggest you fly home prior to Jan 7.

However that's an option.

It's ridiculous that USA and Canadians have to send the physical current pp..

I think every country needs the physical passport. I sent my UK passport off 1 year before its validity ended in July next year, I had to renew my visa extension in December and I knew I wouldn't get a years extension with only 7 months left on my old passport.

Canada is still allowed to use the lettter and I just attach my bank statements from Canada.

The embassy does not take my word for it LOL they want to see the bank statements.

il the CDN Dollar improves

I think we are one fo the few.

Going to have to start building my banks account up to the magic number LOL

But waiting until the CDN Dollar improves

Yes I was extremely surprised to find out that both Canada, USA, and no doubt many others require existing pp to be part of the application.

Especially given that my recent renewal AU passport was all done online using my Android.

The existing pp is not included with application.

I'm aware of the nonsense re "income letter" from embassies.

Then Thai immigration wanted the income verified.

So some embassies stopped providing them.

Passport renewal is completely unrelated.

There should be zero requirement to submit current pp in application process.

What do they need it for.

In most cases, if the person is domestic, they want to destroy it.  Security.  However, they also realize that in the event that a person is outside the country or is travelling a lot they may need the old passport to get stamps copied.

It actually makes sense when you consider that most people who get a passport are doing so for a holiday and not relocation.

If you were living in Aus full-time, would you need your old passport?
