...or just maybe Thailand is the overhyped shiny turd that it is.

I never expected much, so I wasn't disappointed.

I never came here thinking I would stay, it was only supposed to be temporary, I sucked it up for my family's sake. Now after the pandemic we find ourselves stuck here, it's like a cruel joke, but it's not....this place is about as close to Hell as I have ever been.

Actually, it turned out to be exactly what I expected, a 3rd World <deleted>hole.

Yeah but youre going to miss it when you leave. Japanese girls are weird and racist, and western girls are feminized. Take advantage of what thailand offers while you can

I'm married with a daughter, and we didn't meet in Thailand, nor have I ever spent a day here in any bar chasing any girls. It may appeal to barstool expats, old men chasing women half their age, or those interested in pedophilia, but that's about it.

What has a dearth of Japanese long-term visa options got to do with their burgeoning tourism?

Japan is purely a tourist destination and LOS is mix of tourists and long term visa holders  who are probably counted when they come and go.  My point is I believe the numbers posted by the Japanese governmet.

There are cheats lair's and scammers (sic) in pretty much every country. They also tend to prey on a certain demographic or locale. From what I hear, barstools are a really risky place to be.

as I pointed out,  Japan isn't known for scammers, cheats and lairs like here.

enough said on that subject.

I just happen to live in Hawaii.  Lived here all my life.  I've been all over the Pacific, but never to Australia and have no desire to go there.

No-one asked, or invited you, to come, so please, do us a favour, stay away.

Japan has an average IQ of 106, the highest in the World, Thailand is barely treading water at 88. I think education is seriously lacking here in Thailand, but that's by design, last thing the Elite want is an "educated people".

Which is exactly why Thailand wants and needs high tourism numbers. It absorbs a less skilled, less educated workforce.

Where did you get the IQ stats from? I have known some dumb Japanese people.  I have some distant Japanese relatives because Japan occuppied Korea (when it was the Joesen Dynasty) from 1910 until the end of WWII and some in my family line were "invited" to work in Japan.

As opposed to the screaming high tones of Thai's?

In the last 3 weeks I've spent 5 days in Bangkok and 9 days in Central Japan (Tokyo, Nagano & Kanazawa).  Massively different places, and loved all of them for different reasons.  Hiking in the snow-covered Japanese Alps, snow monkeys, shrines, museums, with excellent food & bars.  Bangers was Wats, sport and excellent food & bars.

Plenty of overlap.  I knew Japan was going to be cold, so I prepared.  I knew BKK was going to be hot, so I prepared.  Food and bars were different, but loved both places.  Met great local people in both places.  No safety issues in either place, but I'm way more careful in Bangers, in bars and on roads.  Girly bars in both places, both are expensive and rarely worth it.  "Massages" available in both places, much cheaper in BKK (so I've been told 🤭).  Japan much cleaner (air & trash).  I live in an expensive place, so both places are relatively cheap to me, Japan edges it on value for money though.

Basically, choose what you want and go find it.  Understand the ups and downs.  Not going to go to Thailand for cool-weather hiking, not going to go to Japan for Thai food.  Not going to either place for a bar girl.  Not going to try to retire to Japan, but I love visiting.  Might retire to Thailand but I know there are downsides.

Not my experience, but then again I've not met every single Japanese person there.

I currently live in the 4th placed country, and have done for many years.  The high IQ is deserved, boy there are some amazingly clever people here.

I've never found a country-by-country index for common sense, critical, practical or adaptive thinking though.  Suspect the top 10 countries y IQ would be very, very different.

If you did retire in Japan what kind of long term visa would you pursue? I have researched it and the only options for long term stay in Japan seems to be: 1) Marriage(no way) 2) Employment (too old and Japanese companies do not like to hire Gaijin anyway 3) Education (Doubt I can I actually get accepted by a Japanese university 4) Japan has somekind of  long term visa that the government does not publicize?? My guess is wealthy people would know this but I am not wealthy.

Japan’s rise as a favoured tourist destination over Thailand is attributed to a weaker currency and its preparedness to welcome independent travellers

Great news!

IMO Japan - no ghastly sex tourism, no cannabis shops, no robbing ladyboys, no bars full with whinging old fart ex-pats, hardly any scamming of tourists and a genuine welcome! Long may the country stay at the top!
