Fatal Motorcycle Crash at Notorious Bend Sparks Local Superstition

A factory worker from the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate lost his life in a motorcycle accident during the early hours of the morning of December 23, prompting renewed fears among locals about a so-called “cursed bend” notorious for frequent fatal crashes.

 

At around 03:00 the Sawang Porngkusol Rayong rescue team was alerted to a motorcycle crash on the Tha Banthuk Road near Bangkok-Rayong Hospital, just before the golf course. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers found a damaged pink-and-black Honda motorcycle, registration from Rayong, lying near the base of a streetlight pole.

 

Next to the pole was the lifeless body of 22-year-old Mr. Chanin Treechit, a resident of Samed Daeng Road, Tambon Thap Ma, Muang District, Rayong. His helmet had been ripped off by the force of the i pact and was found near the body. 

 

His injuries were severe: a fractured skull with a large gash on his forehead, a collapsed chest, and a left leg nearly severed at the knee. Despite rescue workers performing CPR and summoning an ambulance from Rayong Hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

 

According to Mr. Chanin’s elder sister, he had been returning home after attending a New Year’s party with colleagues. She suspected he might have been intoxicated and lost control of the motorcycle on the bend, crashing into the streetlight pole.

Authorities are conducting a detailed investigation into the incident. The victim’s body was transported to Rayong Hospital for an autopsy as part of routine procedures.

 

Local residents have expressed their unease about the site of the crash, with many attributing it to supernatural forces. Just days earlier, another fatal accident occurred at the same location, involving a car that struck a streetlight, splitting the pole in two. Residents claim that crashes at this bend seem to peak annually around the New Year period, often resulting in fatalities.

 

Police have yet to confirm the exact cause of the crash, but in the meantime, locals continue to avoid the area, particularly at night, fearing the alleged curse of the bend.

Had numerous accidents occurred on a straight, well lit, good quality road in the absence of other vehicles......then maybe....just maybe....555

Yes, a real classic, blame that bend in the road, despite: 

"suspected he might have been intoxicated and lost control of the motorcycle on the bend, crashing into the streetlight pole."

 

I had my closest miss in my years here at 3am Sunday morning - I was in Chanthaburi heading on motorbike to the start of the marathon / half-marathon at Laem Sadet; aware of car approaching fast from behind I went as left as possible it went past me at high speed by which time I was braking due to the 90-degree corner before a bridge, car crossed the road, spun 180 so now I had its headlights in my face. Driver re-started, did a wheelspinning u-turn and raced away. Almost a pity he hadn't gone into the river, would have been a favour to humanity. 

 

A reminder of how quickly it can change from life-death.

Not actually true. The raid traffic engineers have designed a bend that clearly leads to extra crashes.

Thailand doesn't seem to have such a thing as a traffic engineer.

Sorry, read the OP incorrectly. Sounded like the 'bend' was between Golf & Hospital.

If a driver cannot get round that small bend, they should not be driving.

Almost all accidents are caused by human error… if you are drunk you are more likely to make a human error.
However, good traffic engineering mitigates the results of human error by designing roadways and traffic systems that enhance safety, reduce the likelihood of accidents, and minimize the consequences of mistakes.

By proactively addressing the potential for human error, traffic engineering saves lives and enhances overall system efficiency.

If the bend was better designed and engineered then fewer people would make errors and the results of those errors would be less severe.

We have a few so-called “cursed bend” notorious for frequent fatal crashes of foreigners here in Pattaya and Jomtien. 

 

Jomtien 2nd since its opened has seen many deaths over the years.

As I can't see the bend I can't help. But

Consider camber, land markings eliptical curve?

Kerb conditions,surface of road. armco barriers  and most importantly obstacles on the side of the road. 

This is apparently an accident black spot...or do you think that there are spirits on this piece of road that makes people lose control?

I do see what you are getting at with the 'road engineering comments'....  but you are trying to shoe-horn in a road engineering issue... when this is a 'speeding idiot who couldn't stay on the road issue'

 

The accident occured about 40-50m away from a gentle bend in the road can be seen on the Map posted by KannikaP - also another map pasted below... (arrow points to the accident spot).

 

Anyone unable to navigate such a simple road can't be helped with road engineering.

Its not accident black-spot - thats just BS reporting...    its just an innocuous bit of road along which couple of idiots have managed to crash, through a) being drunk, b) not paying attention..... (or both).

 

The 'spirit' thing is just as stupid and highlights the daft mentality.... its another example of people attempting to blame anything else other than the glaringly obvious - the accident was caused by sheer stupidity - it wasn't caused by the road or spirits....

Looking at the opposite direction from the accident spot to the 'bend in the road'... 

Its seems that the 'rider' crashed into a pole on a straight bit of road.... 

 

How would you engineer your way out that ??????...

Of course, remove the Poles, which I'd agree with.... but the rider would still crash... Perhaps this time into a car on the other side of the road or another motorcyclist etc...

It's a black spot...there is something wrong....you appear to think it's spirits turning people into bad drivers.

Are all gentle bends in roads black-spots then ??...   Or just the ones drunk drivers / riders crash on ?

 

You're so intent on making this a road engineering issue that you can't see the obvious - when drunk drivers and idiots going too fast or fall asleep and crash...   its not the roads fault. 

 

Drunk drivers also crash in to other things so...   You 'could' engineer things to make it safer....  put padding on the side of all roads, only have traffic travelling in one direction (to avoid head on accidents), have run off areas...   of course, all rather daft when 100,000's of people navigate these roads without issue until smashed out of their heads.

You describe exactly what traffic engineering does and then claim it doesn't then you try to say its only a black spot a certain times of the year...basically as ever you have no idea what you are talking about 

The whole point is that countries with low road death death rates do engineer that way and it is a sad fact that some dimwits from those countries don't realise it and mistake themselves to be "great" drivers 

In fact they have spent their entire driving lives cossetted by traffic engineers and the like and have no idea. Like flat farther because they never really think about it, they think it doesn't exist.

I have a cursed bend around where I live too. It's a normal bend like any other but people drive on the wrong side of the road around the bend and then collide. I hope the curse can be lifted one day.
