I have noticed a lot of members following this thread, all of you that are, have you noticed how some members here are going overboard to bury this chap, yes......?

I tell you why. Because I see a lot of careless foreigners on motorcycles and driving cars in Chiangmai on a daily basis and many of them I see doing far worse stunts than the locals. Some guy jacked up on a dirt bike trying to be cool is what I will assume here until I officially hear something else. You that are in his defense are probably just as careless on the road.

I've been driving for 50 years, and professionally for many of them, and have observed the best and the worst driving in many states and a few countries. In all this time, I have noticed, without prejudice, the worst drivers are definitely here, followed by some black women, teens and then older Asians. Lastly there are a few old drivers that aren't bad per se, but drive too slow in places where they should keep up with traffic, and this causes problems.

Here's a random but representative road in Mae On district. As seen on the map this is a very rural area next to the mountains. These dirt bikes amongst others love speeding through the little villages on their day trips. The victim could have been some elderly women who isn't prepared to deal with high speed traffic.

 

The one thing we DO know is that you should always be respectful and never drive fast in residential zones until you're out on the open road. Even if  you hit someone and it was their fault the Thais likely won't care and expect you to watch out for others, regardless of what they do.

 

Look how they live right on the side of the road. They step one foot outside and they're on the road. It's an accident waiting to happen so be careful.

 

 

 

I have driven up Mae Kampong a number of times and always see impatient foreigners on motorcycles. Mae On is usually slow but this time of year it is very crowded with tourists and impatient people.

There was a case around 1 year ago on the news on here with CCTV, a middle aged Thai woman running across the road to a restaurant into the path of a young Thai man, he came off and died (no helmet). I'm pretty sure it was seen as her fault. 

 

She went half way across, then ran back to the car, then ran out again.

Seen it personally at my daughter's school more than twice, and had to talk to the supervisor to get her to stop the teacher who was doing it. I wouldn't hit a woman, but if this was a male teacher he would have gone down for the count, and there wouldn't be one thing they could do.

If I were ever to be run down by a vehicle, I would not wish it to be an American.

I would prefer a Thai person.

But, maybe I could get more money out of the American?

Anyway, I do not drive in Thailand because....

 

I worry about just this kind of accident.

I do not want to be responsible for injury or death to another.
