A school van collided with a lorry on December 6, on Phetkasem Road in Thasae District, Chumphon, leaving the van’s driver critically injured. Authorities suspect drowsy driving as the cause of the crash and are conducting a thorough investigation.

The incident occurred at approximately 08:30 in Moo 6, Hong Charoen Subdistrict, on the Bangkok-bound side of the highway. Police and rescue teams from Salui Police Station were dispatched to the scene.

The collision happened on a steep incline, on a stretch of road with heavy traffic. The silver van, used for transporting students, was found with its front end severely damaged, trapping the driver, identified as Mr. Kiattisak, 42, inside. Rescue workers extricated him from the wreckage and transported him to the hospital in critical condition. A short distance away, the lorry was parked on the roadside, with minor damage.

A nearby shopkeeper, who witnessed the crash, said she saw the lorry moving slowly as it climbed the hill when the van suddenly slammed into its rear. She immediately instructed her daughter to call emergency services and the police.

Initial investigations by the police revealed that the lorry was travelling in the far-left lane designated for heavy vehicles, maintaining a slow speed due to the incline. The van had just finished dropping off students at a local school in Thasae District and was heading back to its base when the crash occurred.

Police suspect the van driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. However, further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collision.

Some people are trying to convince me that I should not homeschool my children. Going to school in Thailand is not safe.

Which is why my Thai son and his wife (with 4 kids) have family van and a small 3 door sedan, so they can take their kids to school and pick them up every day. They live 3 to 5 km from the 3 good bilingual schools involved. Luckily son's wife works from home and son has flexible work hrs.

That could have been the cause of the accident.

The last place the mini bus driver would have expected a slow moving lorry to be, would be in the far-left lane designated for slow heavy lorries.
