NewMexicanInThailand Posted January 7 Posted January 7 It is never going to change. I just moved from Chiang Mai to a southern beach town to improve my air quality. My new home is not perfect but is much better than the north. 1 1

SiSePuede419 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Can't blame it on the North, burning rice fields, forest for mushrooms. The "smog" is worse down south. There's no "forest" down there to burn nor rice fields, It's all jungle and condos and coconut trees and you don't burn those--you have a monkey run up and throw the coconuts down. 🐒
CygnusX1 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 First morning this burning season that I can’t see the nearby island of Koh Larn from my condo in Jomtien. 1
BoganInParasite Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Went for a scenic drive a couple of days ago to a 1,200 metre Hmong village Ban Doi Tio on #4022 a bit to the west of Tha Wang Pha north of Nan city. Didn't bother taking any photos because visibility at the viewpoints was probably down to a couple of kilometers. Really didn't expect that this time of year. (Based on the number of brand new tractors/ploughs and two nurseries it would seem local agriculture and baby making are booming up there.)
dinsdale Posted January 8 Posted January 8 You obviously don't live in or around Bangkok where smog is basically a daily. 1

spidermike007 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 The government should offer incentives, for the farmers to switch crops. This is 2021. Rice and sugar worked in previous centuries. Now, they do not make any sense. Too labor intensive, too much degradation of the land, water, air, and resources. Let's get with the times. Let us move forward. I know I am dreaming. It takes a progressive administration to do these kinds of things, and little Thaksin and her gang are as regressive as they come. The "real youth" must prevail. The dinosaurs must be forced to the side, and the youth must figure out a way to lead this nation forward. Otherwise, it is nothing but darkness, that will prevail. They shut down the economy due to covid. But, burning cane is ok. Can't they see the effect it is having on the air? Do they care one iota? Don't the leaders live here too? Why are they MIA? Why don't the "do nothing guys" do something for a change? When the crop burning starts to kill the population, and lowers the quality of life for those of us who don't die, isn't it time to take action? We just don't need the sugar. Shut down this toxic, heinous industry. Lock up the farmers. Sieze their land. Do whatever it takes. 2

Damn the air is clean in North America isnt it?

Ung Ing and pals are far too busy buying luxury cars and watches to be concerned with actually HELPING people.. What do you think being in power is for?? Surely you didn't think they were going to do any work, god forbid?... Thailand had a chance to move forward in 2023 but the powers that be didn't want that, so it was chalked off as yet another chance squandered.... 2
black tabby12345 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 One of my friends living in Bkk, took a refugee in Chiang Mai rural area to escape from the smog in the capital. He has been asthmatic since his childhood. Hope his condition will be stable.
PeterA Posted January 8 Posted January 8 We here in Phimai get it year round. People burning Eucalyptus to make charcoal. Can't see to the horizon because of the thick blanket of smoke every damn day. The government does nothing.

And the safe limit was always 20 andonly increased because of China never being able to get close. China raised it to 50. Any particles below 2.5 is dangerous and get into the cardiovascular/pulmonary system.

Forget to not farm rice. A Thai doesn't like the taste of food if th\rere is no sugar in it. Forget it. And not the least the big farm companies and their influence. So, forget it.
DD86 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 In Chiang Mai there were hardly clear days in 2024. If it is not wealthy smog, what is it besides the occasional burning months when the sun is a red ball in the afternoon. I leave conspiracy theories aside. 1

The WHO air quality guideline (AQG) states that annual average concentrations of PM2.5 should not exceed 5 µg/m3, while 24-hour average exposures should not exceed 15 µg/m3 more than 3 - 4 days per year. (PM 2.5 of 25 µg/m3 = AQI 78 ... !!!) we do use air purifier since the end of the raining season ... we try to take the health risk of the pollution seriously, not like the thai politicians ...

atpeace Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Have exercise induced asthma so when it hits here, I'll be exercising in my exercise room watching lots of Youtube. It is frustrating but past being miserable during the short burning season here which last usually 1-2 months. If I lived in Chiang Mai, I would be making plans to escape for a few months. 1
UbonEagle Posted January 9 Posted January 9 As the map suggests, the far eastern section of the country this time of year has what I consider pretty good AQ. We are on the outskirts of muang Ubon and even with localised lighting the sky view at night is very very clear. Not always like this of course but we don't have some of the ingredients of the far north that contribute to poor AQ - mountainous areas with hard to contain wildfire often triggered by reckless illegal burning, sugar cane, heavy industries
