The Hostage Families Forum praised Trump’s “unwavering commitment” to secure the release of their loved ones. The families emphasized the need for all parties to reach a deal before the inauguration. Steve Witkoff, Trump’s incoming special envoy to the Middle East, expressed optimism about establishing a 42-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas before Trump assumes office. He noted ongoing collaboration with Biden administration officials to facilitate the peace talks.

 

Trump also addressed various legal issues, criticizing what he described as the “weaponization of justice” by Democrats. He lashed out at special counsel Jack Smith, calling him a “deranged individual,” and criticized Judge Juan Merchan for his handling of a hush money case. Trump, however, praised Judge Aileen Cannon for blocking the public release of Smith’s final report on investigations into Trump.

 

On energy policy, Trump reaffirmed his intention to reverse President Joe Biden’s permanent ban on future offshore oil and gas development in parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. “It will be done immediately,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of such resources for economic growth.

On the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, Trump warned of potential escalation, particularly emphasizing the complications of Russia’s war in Ukraine. He reiterated his threat that failure to release hostages in Gaza by his inauguration would result in severe consequences.

 

Trump’s remarks extended to a wide range of topics, including environmental regulations, the U.S. election system, and his disdain for windmills, which he claimed are “driving the whales crazy.” His son, Donald Trump Jr., visited Greenland, stirring speculation about U.S. interests in the region.

 

Despite Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s firm stance that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” Trump Jr. insisted his visit was personal.

 

Trump’s repeated interest in U.S. territorial expansion has drawn criticism and rejection from leaders in Panama and Denmark. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino refuted Trump’s claims of Chinese interference in the Panama Canal, emphasizing the canal’s sovereignty and the absence of foreign control.

The situation in Gaza could not be worse than it is, though I have no doubts they will try once Trump is inaugurated.

Unless killed by israeli bombing good chances. Many hostages have been imprisoned for far longer.

A permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza do not seem unreasonable. Resumption of aid would be good too.

I'm assuming that even if they survived the bombings, their captors have realized they are not useful as bargaining leverage and killed them.  I don't see any reason they would be kept alive at this point.  If Israel was going to negotiate anything useful for them, they would have done it before the complete destruction of Gaza.
