I've QR/scanned direct to the driver's own bank instead of cash and I'd be surprised if most of them don't accept that method.  I also have BBL, KTB, UOB KBank and Krungsri cards on my Grab payment method list all of which operate normally.

Yeah I'm pretty sure most all of them do indeed accept paying by scans.

Dense of me not to think of that before but I was fooled by it not being in the payment option list.

But I need a stored payment option and that will be True Money Wallet.

Not allowed on foodpanda. Unless it is in a Thai national's name.

Using it for 7-11 deliveries, either paying first or they scan it after arriving is no problem, them scanning it in the 7-11 is no problem. Foodpanda says For Thai nationals only, select a different payment method.

My True Money Wallet works without stored payment (its just linked to a Thai Credit Card).

It works in 7-11 etc - though I've never tried it with FoodPanda

So, I'm not sure if this is a 'Thai National thing' rather it might be related to having a Thai Credit card perhaps ?

I'm surprised people are still using Food Panda - We had many issues with very slow delivery (in Bangkok) and stopped using them years ago.

GRAB Delivery has all the same restaurants and many more - though browsing on the phone is a PITA if you prefer to browse on the bigger computer screen.

Aslo - GRAB standards are slipping, and deliveries are getting slower as they economise (profit) and double up on delivery, so your order could be slower as its delivered on a 'route' rather than a dedicated delivery, unless you opt to pay more for Premium Delivery.

It's kind of a requirement now in Thailand that the local debit card and credit card processing must be processed locally, like being routed through TPN (Thai Payment network) , and because of that, they are not stable and have regular downtime and incidents causing debit cards to fail, specifically Mastercard from BBL. Debit cards are special because they can be routed quickly to the acquiring local banks, and that means using local systems developed here by the the banks, they go down quite often.

Maybe another reason could be high amount of fraud on the local debit cards so they stopped accepting Debit for most transactions.

Do you have to do 3DS/OTP for the debit cards when used with Food Panda?

I think credit card is much better, you get a pretty good protection there.

This is in line with what Bangkok Bank told me. It doesn't explain why some are also having trouble with Visa debit cards though. I was able to successfully add and use my daughter's Krung Sri Visa debit with Grab yesterday though.

Not all the same restaurants.

Very slow service tends to happen more with peak times, holidays, etc.

It used to be foreigners couldn't get a True Money account at all. Now we can.

Thats always been a weird one for me...    I've had a TrueMoney Wallet account and never encountered an issue and don't know why.

I don't have Line Rabbit Pay thingy and can't get it (though I'd never use it anyway) - but years ago, when I tried it blocked me (no non-Thai's).

The idiosyncrasies and 'steps' involved with these some of these 'accounts' are a complete enigma.

The same can be said of actual banking.

- With SCB - I could not get the NDID (face ID) system approved as I am not Thai - so if I wanted to transfer over 50,000 baht in any one transaction I had to sign a waver absolving SCB of any responsibility should there be a fraudulent transaction on my account.

- With Bangkok Bank - I set up the NDID system easily and can transfer more than 50,000 baht with ease using the NDID system.

I'm completely unsure why one Bank wont allow this, and another will.

I have a U.S. credit card but no Thai one.

I wouldn't use my U.S. credit card on these apps.

Do they accept foreign cards? Just asking as I wouldn't use it if they did.

US cards, ahh that is a complex matter 😄

Many companies here actually like to block US cards, because 1), they usually lack 3DS/ACS enrollment, that means, no OTP, and 2) they are often rejected because since there is no 3DS involved, processors and merchants here dont want the liability passed to them, they prefer 3DS transactions because they are not liable for fraud, and 3) US cards get a much higher rates here than local cards (imposed by local acquirers for a good reason). so for example, 1.25% fee on international cards, but as low as 0.4% for local cards. if they are not making much profit, by allowing US cards are likely to be at a loss.

you can use your US card here as long as the app uses a decent payment gateway, that has PCI-DSS. the most popular in Thailand is 2C2P, and then Omise/OPN next to be the most secure, anything else dont trust.

I work in this field, just can't share more than that I already did.

Well yippee!

Sort of.

I was able to open a True Money account and did an initial topup from ironically Bangok Bank.

As reported here Panda won't accept from foreigners.

But I did succeed in adding it as my payment method on Grab.

Yet to use it but seems good.

As far as Panda well I use Grab much more often but I will not be able to stay in their Frequent Gobbler Club discount program as that requires a payment option on record.

I'll cope somehow.

Spoke too soon.

Apparently I need to upgrade True Money to use it for Grab Food by uploading visa documents. Two days for approval.

Update on this is a mixed bag.

Really the only reason that I wanted True Money was because Grab and Panda no longer accepted my Bangkok Bank Mastercard debit card even though I have activated that for online shopping.

As mentioned before Panda doesn't accept True Money from foreigners even though True Money does. Weird, huh?

So I was trying to upgrade my True Money to be used on Grab but whatever instructions they gave me on the phone didn't pan out when I tried it.

So then I thought heck I will try get my Kasikorn Visa debit card to work. Previously I had failed to activate that for online shopping so I called them and they said Grab and Panda would need that to be able to use it.

Even though I had failed several times to active my Kbank card, customer service helped me get that done, and once done, I was able to successfully add it as my default card to Grab. Also I will be able to use it for their premium promotion club which saves me a lot of money. So great on that.

For Panda, it still fails when trying to add as a payment method. Which is no problem if I want to pay cash on scan QR for orders but now with no card payment method on record I can't renew their Panda Pro discount club. Oh well.

Grab was much more important to me anyway.

So now I don't even really need my new True Money account. It does work to pay at 7-11 and for Lazada shopping but I didn't need either as I like to pay cash at 7-11 to get change and I have been paying by bank transfer app on Lazada.

So I have no reason yet anyway to even try to upgrade my True Money account.

It was a pain to open it so I'll keep it open as might actually need it later.

I did a test pay at 7-11 where the clerk scans my QR code and that was pretty cool -- impressed the Russian tourists that I was local.

So sorted for the most part for now.

I had this problem with Grab for about 3 days at the beginning of this week (had to use a credit card) but it seems to have resolved itself now so maybe give it a couple of days as I'm sure Grab and the liked can't afford to not accept BB debit.

With Bangkok Bank MASTERCARD debit card?

Bangkok Bank explicitly told me that both Grab and Panda won't accept that anymore and there's nothing they can do about it. Sure they could be wrong.

Anyway, I got my Kasikorn VISA debit card working on Grab but not Panda.

Is anyone CURRENTLY using their Kasikorn VISA debit card of Panda?

I've entered it several times. Get OTPs but it never accepts it as a payment option successfully.

I see before someone said he had a fraud problem related to use of that on Panda.

I'll be watching for that.

Hey folks. I have the same problem with my Bangkok bank (mastercard) and Foodpanda app. So I'm going to send email to Bangkok bank now, and the attached file I found in Facebook group from another guy with similar problem...

Update on Panda where I can't use my BB mc or Kbank visa debit cards and they restrict True Money to Thais.

To join or renew the Panda Pro status which gets various discounts they have very recently added the option of joining that with Add To Cart when placing any order.

So that helps me as I now only have the cash option with Panda although I have learned you can pay cash orders by scanning driver QR code from your banking apps.

Can you elaborate on that, how was it a pain to open your TrueMoney account? I've had one since 2-3 years, and other than having to upload TWO forms of ID initially (I used my passport and my Thai DL), it was very simple and has been working great ever since.

Not sure what you mean with an "upgrade" either. I had to do the ID verification/KYC right away and haven't required any upgrade since?

I also got their virtual MasterCard, but I'm rarely using it, as I prefer my virtual KBANK debit card for anything paid online - including Grab which has always worked fine for me (as of today, using it for my lunch order).

Now Bangkok Bank is a different story altogether, I've given up on trying to use their MasterCard debit card online.

True Money told me that I needed to upgrade my visa info to upgrade my account to be able to use with online shopping, specifically Grab and Panda. They told me how but when I looked on the app, their instructions made no sense. So I didn't bother as I no longer need True Money for that. Also was not sure what visa info they needed if I could figure out the process as my original visa is 20 years old and immigration doesn't even want to see that anymore!

I see. Was that for linking TrueMoney to Grab directly, or for using their virtual MasterCard with Grab? I've only done the latter, so maybe there is in fact a special "upgrade" requirement for the former (I wouldn't know).
