A 59-year-old foreign man, nationality not disclosed, was arrested in Chiang Mai for selling illicit drugs, specifically psilocybin mushrooms (commonly known as “magic mushrooms”), mixed with honey to foreign tourists. The man, who reportedly has a Thai wife, was apprehended at an unnamed shop located on Ratchawithi Road, in the Sriphum district of Chiang Mai.

On 22 January, Police Colonel Prachaya Tisla, the Superintendent of Chiang Mai City Police, instructed officers from the Anti-Drug Unit to raid the premises following an investigation. The authorities seized 15 bottles of honey containing the psilocybin mushrooms.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, a foreign national, had been secretly selling the mushrooms to other tourists in violation of Thai drug laws. The authorities discovered the illegal substances after conducting a thorough search of the unregistered shop.

The suspect was taken into custody and charged with the illegal possession of a Type 5 narcotic (psilocybin mushrooms) without proper authorisation. The police have confirmed that legal proceedings will follow.

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by local authorities to tackle drug-related offences, particularly those involving substances that are illegal in Thailand.

Good, some foreigners think they can get away with anything just because Thailand opened up for cannabis sale. This is not Amsterdam (yet).

Isn't it banned from Jan 1 2025?

Openly sold in Railey, Krabi. Quite expensive though, but openly.

Not Amsterdam yet? How much further is it?

Many weed shops here in bkk sell packets of vacuum-packed psilocybin mushrooms. As with cannabis, it's legal for medical purposes but must be sold by licensed vendors

Completely agree with the first half of that...

Well yes, the 2nd part was a quote from a song "Who killed Bambi?" by Ten Pole Tudor, from the movie "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" by Malcolm McLaren. In my book, hippies and junkies rate about the same for trustworthiness.

Too early to say. Maybe he'll buy his way out. Hardly the crime of the century. I thought all these minor drug busts were a thing of the past. At least, in terms of custodial sentencing.

Long time ago now, but in the 70s and 80s dishes containing magic mushrooms were openly available at many  resorts/islands in Thailand. Personally I liked the easygoing atmosphere, as I did in Amsterdam in those days.

In Thailand?

For some fragile people, this is a direct route to a psychotic breakdown. But it will continue to be sold as TIT (this is Thailand)...

Tell that to the shops I pass everyday with signs outside, they must not know, I think it was going to be under stricter rules and prescribed only for medical use, can someone update,

Cheers all

He should’ve realized that was a job for Thai people only TIT
