Thai authorities at the Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province have arrested a 29-year-old coyote dancer attempting to smuggle ketamine from Poipet, Cambodia into Thailand. The suspect was also found to be under the influence of multiple drugs.

The arrest took place at the permanent border crossing in Aranyaprathet district, on February 4, where a joint task force comprising the 1201st Ranger Company, the 12th Ranger Regiment, the Burapha Task Force, Sa Kaeo Immigration Police, Klong Luek Police Station, and Aranyaprathet Customs was conducting a routine narcotics and contraband checkpoint.

Authorities stopped the suspect, later identified as Ms. Bowornlak Phonlap, after noticing her suspicious behaviour. A female ranger, identified as Private First Class Paijit Sudso, conducted a search and discovered a red paper packet containing ketamine, which had been concealed inside a black envelope and further hidden inside a white shoulder bag.

During questioning, Ms. Bowornlak, a resident of Maha Sarakham province, admitted to travelling to Poipet on 20 January, initially for tourism. However, she was later recruited by a Thai acquaintance to work as a coyote dancer and PR staff at a nightclub called KTV, earning ฿1,500 per hour.

According to her statement, on 2 February, while working at the nightclub, a Malaysian customer distributed red packets containing money as part of a traditional gift. He also secretly slipped a black envelope into her white handbag, telling her it was a “special package.” Ms. Bowornlak insisted she did not know its contents.

Authorities conducted a urine drug test, which confirmed the presence of methamphetamine (yaba), ecstasy (MDMA), and ketamine in her system. Following further interrogation, Ms. Bowornlak admitted to owning the confiscated drugs.

She was transferred to Kok Soong Police Station in Sa Kaeo for further investigation and will face legal proceedings for drug possession and smuggling. Authorities are also investigating potential links to drug networks operating across the Thai-Cambodian border.

Um, I'm sorry to be old and out of touch but could someone tell me what a 'coyote dancer' is?

(I did try the OED but no luck.)

Someone in the know will no doubt explain.....but why smuggle into Thailand with the inherent risk of being caught and punished.....is there no market for it in Cambodia? Is the price it fetches here so much higher that it is worth the risk to smuggle it in?

Your thinking is flawed in that you assume everyone should have your common sense. That would be nice, but it's not the reality. These people are not at the top of the IQ bell curve. Add to that the temptation of easy money.

Chubby looks very average for a coyote dancer.

She won't be looking like she does now after a few years in a Thai jail.

As they say, you can't fix stupid.

I found my boy - performing what, I guess from the information provided above, was coyote dancing on stage - in Dec 2011, 1 week after arriving for the first time in Thailand. What attracted me was that, of the 7 or 8 lads on stage coyote dancing, he was the only one with a big grin and looking like he was enjoying life.

13 years later we are still together, happily married (in Oz) and living in Surin.
