The Cars offered up something completely different, though not my cup of tea, definitely creative and progressive in various aspects. 

Boston was far from average. They had one of the best singers of that time and two very accomplished guitarists. Rush was progressive at that time and nowhere near redundant. Alex Lifeson is another very accomplished player. They took rock music and expanded it using progressive styles. Innovative is what makes music different than others. The Beatles are considered one of the best bands but their music was very simple. What they did was start a trend. Badfinger were better but didn't last because of their manager and suicides, and they didn't pen tunes for teen girls like the Beatles did.

The Cars did well because they combined rock, punk, new wave and had a distinctive singer, and did this all well.

Well opinions aren't all that matters in music. Peart was one of rock's best drummers, Lifeson one of the best guitarists, and Lee had a rock voice. Their music was a mix of rock and progressive, using keys, and were excellent for having just 3 players, like triumph.

Saw the Cars decades ago. Outdoor concert in a small tennis stadium. Listening to them play "Drive" in the rain. Wang Chung opened for them. It was epic. Sad that Rick Ocasek is no longer with us.

Ocasek was already 35 when the first Cars album was released.  Mick Jagger was only 6 months older than him.  Orr has been dead 25 years time flies.  Great singer.

The Cars.  Moving In Stereo is unquestionably the best song of it's Genre, and they created plenty of other excellent music. Boston, Rush - fine backup bands for the Cars.

Actually, it sounds French, to me.

Pablum must be one of those French words.

And, a word that is not often used.

 

If the word is French, anyway, and I use it about three times in my adult life, and probably never used it when I was below the age of two...

Does it really matter?

Jumped out at me when I first listened to The Cars, or the first time in a very long time, last week.

I was sitting listening, and it became readily apparent.

So then, I figured I needed to discuss this similarity with my friends on TV.
