ID.me login problem. Account suspend, but it's not

Recommended Posts

A couple of days ago I couldn't sign into my ID.me account (using Windows 11 PC and Chrome browser). I contacted the help desk and they did a video chat to re-verify me.  When I went back, it still didn't work. I got on a VPN and got in. I shouldn't have to lie about where I am as ID.me is global.  Anyway, the next day when I tried to log in I got a message saying my account was temporarily suspended!  I contacted the help desk again and they said I was good to go.  I wasn't... every time I try it says account suspended even though ID.me's agent says it's not... geez.

Am I missing some trick?

Good luck, took me nearly a year to get access in EU again after having a similar issue.

Hi Chaiya.  How did you resolve the issue?  Was it something on your computer or mobile settings?  I had no issues until a couple of days ago... suddenly it's mess. 🤦

I can log in to id.me successfully without using a VPN.

Me too until a couple of days ago. It must be something on my computer. That's what I need help figuring out.

I read yesterday, I think, that D.O.G.E had suspended the unit that runs that site.  Fired all the people.  So maybe it's not a surprise you can't log in.  Fortunately, I did my taxes before that happened, so I was able to log in.  Maybe by next year they'll have a fix.

What are you talking about?  ID.me, the IRS, and My Social Security are working.  I just can't log into ID.me

What exactly did you do to remedy the problem?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

When they contacted you did they make you reset your password?  And if so, did you reset it to a password you have used previously at any other websites?

I'm talking about the fact that D.O.G.E fired all the people that ran the site and shut it down.  Perhaps that's why you can't log in?  You say it's working.  How do you know, if you can't log in?

Interesting... no they didn't suggest changing my password. I'll try that this evening when it's US time and I can't get a quicker response. I only use ID.me for SS and IRS logging in.  Thanks for the information. 🙏

I've read that they proactively suspend accounts if an associated email address and password show up on a list of known compromised accounts.  If you use your ID.me email account and identical password on any other websites that might explain it.

I only use it on the My Social Security and the IRS accounts... no others.   I've corresponded with a rep from ID.me several times, but I get generic responses to specific questions. 🤦

If the US government is going to allow a third-party app for critical identification purposes, that app should work and have a working customer service department.  Don't get me started on their AI chatbot... infinite loop of meaningless Q&A. ☹️

Go here and check your email address.  https://haveibeenpwned.com/

If your email address is associated with any known compromises or breached websites it will list them.  Are any listed?

Crickey!  Yes, 10 incidences.  Now what? I guess I'll change my password and perhaps use my secondary email address to sign in.

But why was I able to log in up until a couple of days ago?  The breaches are all old according to the site.  Stupid computers. ☹️

Do any of you use a USB Security Key (physical USB authenticator) in a desktop PC to login to ID.me or anywhere else?  I'm at my wit's end on getting the 6-digit code MFA working. The help desk is doing nothing more than sending me obvious cut-and-paste responses. 😒

ASEAN bloggers are no help have no solutions except for honorable alias

Mr Pib  answers with facts and included obsolete  speculations that are not available. not 2025 up to date tested effective.  The bottom solution and only solution is to keep screaming at the SSA.GOV managers. revolving Directors

in charge to open SSA communication to USA citizens outside the USA.

Why all this BS security blocking access to MySSA account  created by children who have no USA bio-metrics secured integrated circuit protected passports demanded rubber stamps every 90 days to maintain a Thailand bank accopunt. A USA passport is secure way beyond a blue color printed business

card circulated in the USA to access medical and financial records that are all

for sale on the dark web reported 2022 as hacked.

So you outside the uSA stop wasting time here bloffing on ASEAN with people

eho do nothing to help you and get off your and bombard the white house bonbard tour congress man bombard SSA on x get problems solved instead

of wasting time herein...  WHAT you want is the same as the IRS you call them

on a video link and when the IRS agent answer wou show them your face in your camera and show them your USA valid visa passport, it is that simple

how ever people here in preffer to argue and do nothing so nothing happens

have a nice day what ever bobody cares

Can you try logging on from another computer ((friend;s) you trust?

Yep, I tried 3 different ones... same result ☹️

I'm thinking about buying a FIDO2 security get to generate codes.  ID.me accepts that as a MFA option.  I just started searching, but I don't seeing many in Thailand that either don't fit the bill or are expensive. Lazada sells them, but I don't buy anything electronic from them.

The FIDO key is an option, not just the sole solution.

I bought mine from SIAMBC on Lazada.

Specifically: YubiKey 5 NFC FIDO U2F FIDO2 Yubico Security Key

THANKS!  I was looking at this one last night and decided to try it. It's so nice hearing you say that it works for you!   I'll order one today.  🙏🙏

Before the gov't forced SSA.GOV users to switch to login.gov or ID.me, I used an email/password combo and 2FA was done via an email or SMS.  I chose ID.me and set it up more than a year ago.

A few days ago, I tried my original SSA sign on method and it still works.  Have you tried the old login method for SSA?

I never use a VPN for access unless I can't get access without it.  So far only a Canadian bank forces me to use it.

Yeah, actually, I tried that a couple of days ago (user name and pw) and it still works.  They swore that option was not going to be available many many months ago.  I'm so glad it's still available. That's keeping me from going into full panic mode. 😉

I looked at Lazada and don't really like their guarantee or return policy. I'm going to get mine directly from SiamBC just for the peace of mind. They claim to have a really user-friendly policy if something goes wrong.  This model is about 300 baht cheaper on Lazada, but 300 baht ain't worth the potential hassle.

What about login.gov, can you use that? Most sites using  ID.me also accept login.gov

Of those two options I find login.gov is faster.  Often ID.me ignores my mouse clicks, requiring me to click several times.

When I was researching both last year, Login.gov seemed to require a US phone number and ID.me didn't.  Were you able to get a login.gov account here without a US number?  If so, how did you go about doing that?  I'm definitely interested.  Thanks in advance for any details. 🙏

Yeah, even when it works it's glitchy.  How did they acquire (buy?) a contract with the US government? 🤔

login.gov requires a US phone (not VOiP, Skype number, etc) in YOUR NAME from what I read online. I could get my brother to accept any validation code, but his phone is in his name. I don't really want to do anything that isn't 'by the book'. They seem to love to throw hurdles in front of us expats. We're not criminals, we're simply trying to access OUR government's sites legally. 🤦
