My youngest son could probably do with a laptop. It may or may not get broken. The highest drain would be video chatting with his friends while playing some games.

An entry level machine will do until he has shown he can take care of it well and not knock it off a table or stand on it when it's in it's bag on the floor etc.

16gb of ram is standard now by the looks of things.

But the CPU. They're so much lower a PC.

3.7ghz base speed 4.4ghz turbo for an entry level PC, but the entry level laptop CPUs are only around 2ghz base.

Physical condition (scratches etc don't matter) neither does the battery condition, as long as it works in a powercut.

Which is more advisable for performance and lack of lagging when video calling and light gaming. A new less powered CPU and device, or a slightly used by higher powered CPU etc?

Avoid the CPU with a U appending, if you want performance. Those use less power and are used for laptops for longer battery life.

You can use nanoreview.net to do a "versus" between 2 CPUs.

I have done it for your 2 CPUs. Take a look here

https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/amd-ryzen-7-5700u-vs-amd-ryzen-3-7320u

The Ryzen 7 5700u is faster in every facet compared to the Ryzen 3 7320u. The only advantage of the Ryzen 3 7320u is in power efficiency, it's about 10% more power efficient.

The Ryzen 7 has a better CPU but a poorer graphics capability.

The Ryzen 7 uses the AMD Radeon Graphics 512SP solution.

To give an idea of a comparison between the AMD Radeon Graphics 512SP and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650, TechPowerUp rates the standalone graphics at more than 2.5 times superior overall.

So now you need to check if his games are CPU based or Graphics based.

Very good information, thank you.

I was looking at this windows 11, nearly new, 11,000THB due to the 2.8g base frequency and 4.3g turbo.

- AMD Ryzen5-7520U @ 2.8-4.3 GHz
- AMD Radeon 610M
- Ram 16 GB LPDDR5 4800 MHz

But it ends with a U.

These 2 windows 10 are 15,000THB nearly new.

I guess you need to make a decision between:

https://www.powerbuy.co.th/en/product/ACER-Aspire-Lite-15-Notebook-15-6-AMD-Ryzen-7-RAM-16GB-512GB-AL15-41P-R47V-NX-J53ST-001-303852

and

Asus Tuf Gaming F15 FX506LH-HN002T

Also, you should take note of the condition of the second hand device. Gaming machine might be more robust, but of course it's already been used. Probably has a better screen. Either way, the Acer should be able to handle the described tasks.

https://versus.com/en/amd-ryzen-7-5700u-vs-intel-core-i5-10300h

despite a base speed of only 1.8ghz, the ryzen is 44% faster.

8 x 1.8ghz

4 x 2.5 ghz

I hadn't considered the number of cores.

44% faster CPU speed
8 x 1.8 GHzvs4 x 2.5 GHz

1333 MHz higher RAM speed (max)
4266 MHzvs2933 MHz

8 threads more CPU threads
16 threadsvs8 threads

30W lower TDP
15Wvs45W

7 nm smaller semiconductor size
7 nmvs14 nm

1.89x higher PassMark result
15838vs8364

3 MB bigger L2 cache
4 MBvs1 MB

256 KB bigger L1 cache

Which makes it an easier decision. Thanks.

The more you pay the more you get as with most things.

For anything related to video it's generally down the the GPU and not so much the CPU

Lots of things to think about

Ryzen 7 U = 15 watt

Ryzen 5 H = 28 watt

Ryzen 5 HS = 35 watt

this is very little difference in use - just how long the battery will last on a charge, the Ryzen 7 U is newer, + maybe 8% faster that a Ryzen 5 H  [the Ryzen 7 7735HS is a lot faster + much higher price]

Then comes the GPU Graphics, the old Vega 8 is far better than the newer found in many laptops 610M base graphics -  best low cost GPU is AMD Radeon RX 5500M -   the RX 7900M is the other end + high price

For info all my life only had AMD, Both Desktops and Laptops  had a few NVIDIA GeForce graphics, but always had problems, so changed a few years ago to ATI Radeon/AMD Radeon graphics so far in past 18 years never had a problem with these cards.....

Ryzen and AMD look good.

Most laptops only come with 2 usb-a ports, so the usb-c port would be important if docking peripherals. For example there might be a cooling fan, a mouse, a keyboard, a usb headset and a lan cable. I think the usb-c speed to have is 10mbps. Would all of these laptops have this usb-c speed as standard? Or is there something to look out for in terms of their usb-c speed too? Thanks.

The USB-C port to which you are referring will be either 5Gbps or 10Gbps. ACER is 5Gbps, but the ASUS, dependent on the specific model, might be 10Gbps. 10mbps wouldn't be much good 😊

Thanks. I would guess that having 10 instead of 5 is quite important if connecting a lan cable, mouse and keyboard into it.

I will ask him to clear it or reformat it after buying it as it already has programs etc installed.

When buying a nearly new computer, what is best to do in terms of clearing it completely so it's like a turning it on for the first time?

Just use a program such as CCleaner to uninstall all the stuff you don't want?

Or is there a better reset option?

TIA.

TIA.

A normal factory reset. There are always programs installed.

Check the quality of the screen in full daylight before committing yourself. Some might find it not bright enough.

You might wish to run something like this, https://wpd.app/  to disable some of the features/spying. It just makes the selection to deny, much easier than searching through each option yourself.

Thanks.

It's resetting windows now.

One thing is the ethernet port, it's much thinner than the cables in our condominium. I guess there are new ones out that should also fit the router. Or can buy ones that are thin on one end and normal on the other end?

Why not post a pic? It looks like a normal RJ-45 to me.
