I worked out this week I would have to change personalities if I was going to retire here in Pattaya in particular.

 

The "phasing " in of change happens after a few days of your personality where you have to be mentally stronger to survive in this urban jungle 

 

I will give you a few examples 

 

I go into a 711 unlike Australia people particularly from a indian background don't wait in line and push in front of you ( oh please don't be racist there's no need to mention nationality please !)

 

So here I am waiting more than 5 minutes in line holding bottles of water next to be served when a indian young girl and her I presume indian bf just walk past me to the counter 

I immediately said my favourite saying *not this little black duck !

 

"Hey I'm next " and with that the girl replied "we think it's ok 'she said 

 

I laughed in her face "not this little black duck sweetheart !!!" I said 

 

They immediately went behind me (in front of an old farang  man who said nuthin)

 

So here unlike Australia I have to become mean George ,nasty George!

Confidence, eyes out ! 

 

Another saying I like and I have screenshot it to put it as wallpaper on my phone is

"what do I get out of it " !??

 

Yesterday morning I'm staying in a farang hotel in Pattaya,paid cash to this 8 bedroom or 6 bedroom hotel ( oh who cares about rooms)

 

Anyway check out is 12pm right 

The farang owner knocks on my door 

"George ,George I need you to vacate this room by 9am

I have a regular farang coming from Bangkok and he is arriving early ,he needs the room 

 

I look at him , "so what do I get out of it "??

He thinks I'm joking and laughs ,he said I have another room I can move you into if you want to stay another night  but it has no balcony "

 

I said"I'm leaving today !

He said, "can you leave by 9am ,Old Frank is arriving and he asked if you could vacate the room so he can go in" 

 

I looked at him straight in the face and said "tell old Frank Not this little black duck ! 

What am I getting out of it ?

 

you see how I used two of my favourite sayings in one sentence to him , 

 

I sat in the room waiting to the minute of 12pm before I walked downstairs ,

I saw old Frank with his walking stick sitting in the bar downstairs,with luggage bag nearby

looking at me angry

,I smiled as I walked past both the owner and Frank ,I felt like I stood up to myself and proud 

 

I was tempted to say my 2 sayings again to him but they both didn't talk to me 

 

So you see ,living here you have to CHANGE.its not Kansas Dorothy ,here people will use you & abuse you if you let them.walk over you like a bitch , stamp on you 

 

You have to grow a set of balls 

 

More examples and please stop interrupting me ,dont be rude 

 

And how do you like this one 

 

I'm sitting in a beer bar ,watching people going past ,relaxing enjoying the lower class of people watching .....when a Thai waiter asks me to move my drinks etc to the back away from the front 

Why ? Why ? You may ask ...a regular customer always sits there 

 

Oh ? I said ,so I must leave the front table and go sit in the back to let whatever the guys name is sit in my seat so...he can people watch and I have to stare at the wall ?

 

WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT ?

I showed the farang the screenshot of one of my sayings 

couldn't show the Thai waitress she would have no idea what it meant 

 

Is he going to pay for my drink ?

NO ? 

Give me absolutely nothing , probably wouldn't even say thankyou

I have lived in Thailand 37 years and have never been to Pattaya , but have been all

around Thailand .

You have to have your guard up 

Different cultures etc will use & abuse you 

There's no niceties , even getting on the baht bus I noticed people jumping on first to get a seat in front of elderly people so now I am doing the same thing !

Nasty George ,you have to change. 

 

Funny, this type of thing never happens to me, or if it has I can't remember and likely got over it fast (people cutting in line etc). There's a time and place for having big balls, but this stuff is best let go, or perhaps leave the ego at home.

Best restaurants are based on personal opinion....but apparently there is a cheap type thai restaurant in Bangkok that charges something like $200 for a Thai dish and they have people lining up outside

Im a fan of Nana Burger in the parking lot across from Nana Plaza. Fabulous burgers, great floor show.

I've never had problems with Indians, only mainland Chinese. A queue seems to mean nothing to them. I refuse to make a scene because I will always be the loser in these situations.

Not in Udon. No Chinese, Indians or Russians. Locals are mostly friendly. Hotel with pool 360 baht. Large room with balcony.

After reading, I understand you have a big problem with, and living in, Thailand, George. However, most of us living here, we learned how things work quite quickly and know what we have to do or adjust to. Seems to me, it would be better for you, to ask for moderation on your headline. It should be I have to change and not directed at other members. Cheers!

It took me just a few hours to realise how crap Pattaya is and the people who go there so I left.

 

I went back ten years later just to see if it had improved, it was worse.

 

I will give it a try ten years from now.
