This.morning 5.30 am went to 7/11 for milk...only 500 yards away...first drunk foreign passenger on bike almost falling off, only held on by hiss gd/bargirl..arrive at 7/11, drunk yank shouting and screaming at a win taxi, follows me into 7/11 and teya to interact with me, leave 7/11 on bike another drunk foreigner staggering down the road shirtless, turn the corner and yet another drunk foreigner...

They always do this. EVERYBODY knows about Pattaya’s ‘image’. If it was magically turned into a peaceful haven and no mongers went there, it would still have that image. It is what it is. You may be able to put lipstick on a pig and get away with it, but you can’t polish a turd!

Last time I went to Pattaya I went into a bar and one extremely drunk customer (Dutch I think) told me I had to take my shoes/socks off before I came in. I laughed it off initially, ordered a beer and sat down but he approached me 2-3 more times demanding I remove my shoes. Given my extremely impolite final response, that could easily have turned into an "unfortunate incident" had one of the staff not intervened and told him to sit down and stop being such a tool.

 

I actually find 95% of the Thais there to be OK and about 70% of the foreigners to be weirdos. No wonder they look down on us.

I've been living in Chanthaburi these last three years. This month I've had to make several trips to Pattaya for a root canal/crown replacement as my favorite dentist practices there. I don't know if it's me or if Pattaya just seems worse than I could ever imagine it. Horrendous traffic, rude foreigners, just a general feeling of malaise in the air.

 

I used to think once I finished this teaching gig and finally retired, I would move back to Pattaya/Jomtien. Now, I'm not so sure.
