In a significant legal development, the Narathiwat Provincial Court delivered sentences to seven men involved in the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl. The case, which began in August last year, concluded yesterday with sentences ranging from two to 87 years. This distressing incident mobilised both local authorities and children’s rights advocates.

Initially, complications arose in the investigation due to the victim's mother being unavailable, necessitating the child's relocation to Nonthaburi Province. This move required a cohesive strategy involving a multidisciplinary team to ensure the child's protection during interviews. The Sentencing Coordination Programme (SCP) played a pivotal role, safeguarding the victim's rights throughout the legal process.

The court found four adults guilty, handing down sentences that varied from 29 to 87 years, though some were adjusted to the maximum legal span of 50 years under Article 91. Each adult was ordered to pay reduced compensation, acknowledging partial payments already made.

In a separate hearing, the Narathiwat Juvenile Court sentenced three juveniles involved, with terms ranging from two to almost 40 years. Their time will be served at Yala Training Centre, with financial compensation also considered against bail amounts.

The Director-General of Rights Protection and Legal Aid underscored the gravity of the crime, which remains unforgivable. Emphasising severe sentencing as a deterrent, the court's decision sends a clear message: such heinous acts will attract the harshest penalties, and justice will be pursued against those still at large, reported The Thaiger.

Two year is far too low, and should not exist in such cases.

Max 87 years behind bars.

It means No Early Release or Parole.

Looks like Thailand is copying US approach; eliminating any chances of commuting jail term, in case of the

sexual predator/dangerous criminals.
